Thalomid (not available in Canada) is for the treatment and prevention of moderate to severe skin inflammation in leprosy patients and to prevent its recurrence. It should not be used if the patient also has moderate to severe nerve inflammation.

Thalomid (not available in Canada) can cause very severe, life-threatening birth defects in infants born to pregnant women who take Thalomid (not available in Canada). Do not take Thalomid (not available in Canada) if you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking Thalomid (not available in Canada). Even one dose of Thalomid (not available in Canada) can harm the developing fetus. You will need to discuss the potential effects of Thalomid (not available in Canada) with your doctor before you begin taking it.

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Thalomid (not available in Canada) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not take Thalomid (not available in Canada) if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. One dose of Thalomid (not available in Canada) can cause severe or life-threatening birth defects if you are pregnant while taking Thalomid (not available in Canada). Stop taking Thalomid (not available in Canada) at once if you suspect that you are pregnant and contact your doctor. Women must have a negative pregnancy test within 24 hours of starting Thalomid (not available in Canada). Women must commit to not having sexual intercourse or use 2 methods of reliable birth control, including at least 1 highly effective method (such as an IUD or hormonal birth control) and 1 additional effective method (such as a latex condom, diaphragm, cervical cap), starting 4 weeks before starting Thalomid (not available in Canada), during therapy, and for 4 weeks after stopping use. Male patients taking Thalomid (not available in Canada) must always use a latex condom when they engage in sexual intercourse with a woman who could become pregnant. Carefully follow the instructions given to you by your health care provider. Do not share Thalomid (not available in Canada) with anyone else. Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur if you stand up too fast from lying or sitting. Get up slowly and avoid sudden posture changes. Drowsiness or blurred vision may also occur. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Thalomid (not available in Canada) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Do not expose yourself for long periods of time to the sun or other forms of UV light such as tanning beds). Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Do not drink alcohol or take other medications that may cause drowsiness while taking Thalomid (not available in Canada). If you experience numbness, tingling, pain, or a burning sensation while taking Thalomid (not available in Canada), please contact your health care provider at once. Contact your doctor at once if you develop a skin rash, fever, fast heartbeat, or low blood pressure. This may be signs of an allergic reaction. Do not donate blood while taking Thalomid (not available in Canada). Males should not donate their sperm while taking Thalomid (not available in Canada). Lab tests, including pregnancy tests for women, will be required before, during, and after treatment. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Thalomid (not available in Canada) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Thalomid (not available in Canada). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
