Tofranil (imipramine) is used for the treatment of depression in adults. It is also used for the treatment of bedwetting in children 6 years of age and older.

Do not take Tofranil (imipramine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Tofranil (imipramine) or similar medications you are currently taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) you are recovering from a recent acute heart attack

Before using Tofranil (imipramine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you will be having surgery if you have any other medical condition

Use Tofranil (imipramine) with extreme caution in patients with a history of convulsive disorders and other predisposing factors, e.g., brain damage of varying etiology, concomitant use of neuroleptics, alcoholism and withdrawal from alcohol, and concomitant use with other drugs that lower the seizure threshold

Other: Occasional: skin rash, urticaria. Isolated cases: petechiae, itching, photosensitization (avoid excessive exposure to sunlight), edema (general or of face and tongue), drug fever, obstructive jaundice, nasal congestion, alopecia, allergic alveolitis (pneumonia) with or without eosinophilia, systemic analphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions including hypotension.

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Tofranil (imipramine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Once symptoms are controlled, it may be necessary to continue therapy for several months to lessen the chance of relapse. For childhood bedwetting, Tofranil (imipramine) should be given 1 hour before bedtime. Doses above the recommended dose do not enhance effects and tend to increase side effects. In early night bedwetters, the drug is more effective given earlier and in divided doses (eg, half the dose in midafternoon, and the other half at bedtime). Do not use in combination with an MAOI or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with an MAOI. After stopping Tofranil (imipramine), wait at least 2 weeks before starting an MAOI. Tofranil (imipramine) may take 1 to 3 weeks to become effective. Using Tofranil (imipramine) with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants (eg, pain relievers, sedatives, antihistamines) may cause added drowsiness. Tofranil (imipramine) may cause drowsiness or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring mental alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Tofranil (imipramine) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Taking Tofranil (imipramine) at bedtime may help reduce side effects (eg, daytime drowsiness). Discuss this possibility with your doctor. Notify your doctor if dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, increased heart rate, impaired coordination, difficult urination, excessive sedation, or seizure occur. Notify your doctor if you experience drowsiness, dizziness, or dizziness or lightheadedness when rising quickly from a seated or lying position. Your doctor may need to reduce the dose. Notify your doctor if you develop a fever or sore throat. Lab tests may be required. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not use alcohol while taking Tofranil (imipramine). Diabetic patients may experience loss of glucose control. Be prepared to monitor blood sugar more often. Supervise Tofranil (imipramine) carefully at home. Do not stop taking Tofranil (imipramine) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Tofranil (imipramine). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

Store Tofranil (imipramine) between 59 to 86 degrees F.
