What is Uniphyl SR (theophylline) used for? |
Uniphyl SR (theophylline) is used to treat symptoms of chest tightness and difficulty breathing associated with asthma and other lung disease (eg, asthma and bronchospasm due to chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Do not take Uniphyl SR (theophylline) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Uniphyl SR (theophylline) or to similar medications or products (eg, caffeine, chocolate) you have active peptic ulcer disease you have a seizure disorder you are taking a similar medication |

What are the side effects of Uniphyl SR (theophylline)?

Most severe: Fast heartbeat; persistent vomiting; irregular heartbeat; seizures; vomiting of blood.
|

Most common: Nausea; vomiting; headache; sleeplessness.
|
|
Other: Diarrhea; irritability; restlessness; muscle tremors; increase in urination; stomach pain; nervousness; disorientation.

How should I take Uniphyl SR (theophylline)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Uniphyl SR (theophylline) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. You must be consistent in the way you take Uniphyl SR (theophylline). Either consistently take Uniphyl SR (theophylline) with food or take Uniphyl SR (theophylline) on an empty stomach. Do not crush or chew. Take Uniphyl SR (theophylline) at the same time every day. Stop taking Uniphyl SR (theophylline) and contact your health care provider if nausea, vomiting, persistent headache, sleeplessness, or rapid heartbeat occurs. Contact your doctor if you develop a new illness, especially if accompanied by a persistent fever, if you experience worsening of a chronic illness, or if you start or stop smoking cigarettes or marijuana. Remind all of your health care providers that you are taking Uniphyl SR (theophylline), especially when a new medicine is added or an old medicine is stopped. Avoid large amounts of caffeine-containing food or beverages, such as tea, coffee, cocoa, and cola drinks, or large amounts of chocolate because these products may increase side effects. Lab tests may be necessary to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Uniphyl SR (theophylline) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Uniphyl SR (theophylline). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it at the next scheduled time.
