What is Urecholine (bethanecol) used for? |
Urecholine (bethanecol) is used to treat retention of urine by helping the bladder to contract properly.

When should Urecholine (bethanecol) not be taken?
|
Do not take Urecholine (bethanecol) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Urecholine (bethanecol) or to similar medications, if you have hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcer, latent or active bronchial asthma, pronounced bradycardia or hypotension, vasomotor instability, coronary artery disease, epilepsy or parkinsonism. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Urecholine (bethanecol) ?

Before using Urecholine (bethanecol), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart disease, lung disease, impairment of kidney or liver functions. |

Most severe: Severe allergic reaction (redness, itching, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing); asthma attacks
|

Most common: Stomach cramps; discomfort; pain; nausea; belching; diarrhea; rumbling stomach; salivation; urinary urgency; headache; flushing causing a feeling of warmth, sensation of heat around the face; sweating; constant feeling of having to urinate; tearing; change in pupil size; dizziness; fainting; lightheadedness.

Other: Salivation, flushing of the skin ("hot feeling"), sweating.

How should I take Urecholine (bethanecol)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Urecholine (bethanecol) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take on an empty stomach. If taken soon after eating, nausea and vomiting may occur. Take medicine on an empty stomach either one hour before meal or two hours after a meal. Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may occur, especially when rising from a seated or lying position. Patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not stop taking Urecholine (bethanecol) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Urecholine (bethanecol). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Urecholine (bethanecol) at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets. |
