What is Vasotec (enalapril) used for? |
Vasotec (enalapril) is used to lower high blood pressure or manage certain kinds of heart failure. It may be used in combination with other blood pressure or heart failure medications.

What are the side effects of Vasotec (enalapril)?

Most severe:ÿ Severe allergic reaction; excessive low blood pressure; liver failure; fetal death or birth defects; stopping of the heart; swelling of the lungs; blood clots in the lungs; death of lung cells; chest pain; heart attack.

Most common:ÿ Cough; fatigue; dizziness; headache.
|
|
Other:ÿ Sensitivity to light.

How should I take Vasotec (enalapril)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount or frequency of Vasotec (enalapril) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur if you stand up too fast from a lying or sitting position. If fainting occurs, stop taking Vasotec (enalapril) until you talk to your doctor. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or rundown for a few weeks after beginning therapy. Continue taking your medication even though you may not feel quite "normal." Contact your doctor or pharmacist about any new symptoms. African-American patients may not receive the same effects from Vasotec (enalapril). Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium while taking Vasotec (enalapril) unless advised to do so by your doctor. Do not stop taking Vasotec (enalapril) without checking with your doctor. Contact your doctor at once if swelling of face, hands, feet, eyes, lips, tongue or difficulty in swallowing or breathing occur. A persistent, dry, nonproductive cough may occur. Tell your doctor if this occurs. Recovery is rapid when Vasotec (enalapril) is stopped. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep all appointments. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any over-the counter or prescription medications without talking to your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should avoid changes in temperature and talk with their health care provider before taking Vasotec (enalapril). If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless told to by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Vasotec (enalapril) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen until tolerance is determined.
