What is Viokase (pancrealipase) used for? |
Viokase (pancrealipase) is used to treat and replace pancreatic enzymes in patients who do not produce normal amounts

Before using Viokase (pancrealipase), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have impairment of heart, lung, liver and kidney functions |

Tell your health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Viokase (pancrealipase) works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of Viokase (pancrealipase)s. |
What are the side effects of Viokase (pancrealipase)?

Most severe: Allergic reaction (rash; hives; breathing difficulties; swelling of the mouth, face, and lips); nausea; vomiting. Asthma attack if contents are inhaled
|
|
Most common: Rash; loose stools (usually at high doses); bloating; constipation; stomach cramps or pain, nausea.
|
|
Other: Mouth irritation, extremely high doses of exogenous pancreatic enzymes have been associated with hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria
|
How should I take Viokase (pancrealipase)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Viokase (pancrealipase) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Viokase (pancrealipase) as directed by your health care provider. Swallow tablets whole. Do not crush or chew them. Swallow tablets quickly to lessen the chance of mouth irritation. High doses of Viokase (pancrealipase) may cause loose stools. Do not stop taking Viokase (pancrealipase) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Viokase (pancrealipase). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Viokase (pancrealipase) at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets. |
