What precautions should I follow when taking Viramune (nevirapine) ?

Before using Viramune (nevirapine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation (especially St. John's wort), or dietary supplement if you have impaired liver or kidney function if you have a history of hepatitis B or C if you have a skin rash if you have any other medical condition. Viramune (nevirapine) may decrease the effects of some oral contraceptive pills. To prevent unwanted pregnancy, it is advisable to use some additional contraceptive measures as well. |

What are the side effects of Viramune (nevirapine)?

Most severe: Swelling of the liver (yellowing of the skin or eyes; tiredness; loss of appetite; pale stools; dark urine); nausea; severe rash; fever; general body discomfort; muscle or joint pain; blisters; mouth sores; swelling of the eyelids; swelling of the face, blistering, peeling and loosening of skin.

Most common: Vomiting; diarrhea; nausea; tiredness; headache; fever, sore throat, sores, ulcers or white spots in mouth.

Other: Muscle pain; drowsiness; stomach pain; abnormal skin sensations.

How should I take Viramune (nevirapine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Viramune (nevirapine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Viramune (nevirapine) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet that is provided with Viramune (nevirapine) and reread it each time you get your prescription refilled. Before taking Viramune (nevirapine), talk with your health care provider about what medicines should not be taken with Viramune (nevirapine). Viramune (nevirapine) must be taken with other medicines that treat HIV infection to be effective. Viramune (nevirapine) may be taken with water, milk, or soda and with or without food. If a rash occurs while taking Viramune (nevirapine), stop taking Viramune (nevirapine) and talk with your health care provider at once. Do not restart therapy with Viramune (nevirapine) after experiencing a rash or liver problems without talking with your health care provider. Stop using Viramune (nevirapine) and contact your doctor immediately if any of the following occur: Yellowing of the skin or eyes; tiredness; loss of appetite; dark urine; pale stools; liver tenderness. Contact your doctor at once if you develop rash with general ill feeling, fever, muscle or joint pain, blisters, mouth sores, swelling of the eye, swelling of the face, or tiredness. When Viramune (nevirapine) supply begins to run low, get more from your doctor or pharmacy as soon as possible. The virus may develop resistance to Viramune (nevirapine) if you stop taking it, even for a short period of time, and may become harder to treat. Viramune (nevirapine) is not a cure for HIV infection and you may continue to acquire illnesses/infections associated with HIV infection. Remain under the care of your health care provider. Viramune (nevirapine) offers no protection from the transmission of HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Use barrier forms of contraception (eg, condoms) if you are infected with HIV. Certain birth control pills may not be as effective while taking Viramune (nevirapine). Women taking birth control pills should use additional or other birth control measures (eg, condoms, diaphragms). HIV-infected mothers should not breastfeed their infants because of the risk of transmitting the HIV infection. Viramune (nevirapine) may cause drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Lab tests will be required while taking Viramune (nevirapine), especially during the first 12 weeks of use. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Viramune (nevirapine) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Viramune (nevirapine). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations (especially St. John's wort) or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
