What is Xenical (orlistat) used for? |
Xenical (orlistat) is used to manage obesity, including weight loss and weight maintenance when used along with a reduced-calorie diet. It is also used to reduce the risk of weight gain after prior weight loss. It is to be used in obese patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater, or 27 kg/m 2 in patients with other risk factors, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or high cholesterol.

Before using Xenical (orlistat), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have history of eating disorders if you have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Xenical (orlistat)?

Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding before starting the use of Xenical (orlistat). Use of Xenical (orlistat) is not recommended if you have a history of malabsorption syndrome or gallbladder conditions. Use of Xenical (orlistat) in children under age 12 is not recommended. Discuss with your health care provider the benefits and risks of giving Xenical (orlistat) to your child. |
What are the side effects of Xenical (orlistat)?

Most severe: Allergic reaction including rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing.
|

Most common: Oily spotting; gas with discharge; urge to have a bowel movement; oily or fatty stools; an oily discharge; increased number of bowel movements; inability to control bowel movements.

Other: Abdominal pain

How should I take Xenical (orlistat)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about how much or how often you should take Xenical (orlistat), talk with your health care provider. Take Xenical (orlistat) with each main meal containing fat (during or up to 1 hour after a meal). You should be on a nutritionally balanced, reduced-calorie diet that contains no more than 30% of calories from fat. The daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed over 3 main meals. If a meal is missed from time to time or contains no fat, you can skip the dose. You should take a multivitamin supplement containing vitamins A, D, E, and K to ensure good nutrition. The supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before or after you take Xenical (orlistat), such as at bedtime. The effects of Xenical (orlistat) can be seen as soon as 24 to 48 hours after taking and stop within 48 to 72 hours after you stop taking it. Read the information given with Xenical (orlistat) before starting Xenical (orlistat). Do not use Xenical (orlistat) if you are pregnant. Eating a meal high in fat while taking Xenical (orlistat) increases the risk of side effects involving the stomach and intestines. Diabetic patients - Weight loss caused by Xenical (orlistat) may mean that your dose of diabetes medicine be should changed. Consult your doctor. Do not stop taking Xenical (orlistat) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Xenical (orlistat). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Xenical (orlistat) at room temperature (59 to 86 degrees F). Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children. |
