What is Zocor (simvastatin) used for? |
Zocor (simvastatin) is used in combination with changes in diet to lower blood cholesterol levels in patients with heart disease and high cholesterol levels. It is also used to treat patients with high lipid levels.

When should Zocor (simvastatin) not be taken?

Do not take Zocor (simvastatin) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Zocor (simvastatin) you are pregnant or breastfeeding you have active liver disease or elevated liver enzymes |
What precautions should I follow when taking Zocor (simvastatin) ?

Before using Zocor (simvastatin), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are planning to become pregnant if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you consume more than 3 alcoholic beverages per day if you have a history of liver disease if you have severe kidney impairment if you are taking warfarin if you have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Zocor (simvastatin)?

Zocor (simvastatin) has been ocassionally known to cause liver and muscle tissue damage, so be sure to inform your health care provider immediately if you notice any unexplained muscle tenderness, weakness, or pain, especially if you also have a fever or feel sick. The patient should be placed on a diet, at least an equivalent to the American Heart Association (AHA) step 1, before receiving Zocor (simvastatin) and should continue on this diet during treatment with Zocor (simvastatin). If appropriate, a program of weight control and physical exercise should be implemented. |
What are the side effects of Zocor (simvastatin)?

Most severe:ÿ Muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain; severe allergic reaction (giant hives; swelling of the face or mouth; difficulty breathing).

Most common:ÿ Constipation.
|
|
Other:ÿ Diarrhea; indigestion; gas; nausea; weakness; rash; itching; skin inflammation; stomach pain; headache.

How should I take Zocor (simvastatin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Zocor (simvastatin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Zocor (simvastatin) in the evening unless otherwise advised by your health care provider. Advise your health care provider if you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice. Zocor (simvastatin) is most effective when used with exercise and a diet that reduces the intake of cholesterol (fat) and saturated fats. Stop using Zocor (simvastatin) and contact your doctor immediately if any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness occurs. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Zocor (simvastatin) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Zocor (simvastatin). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next appointment.
