What is Zometa (zoledronic acid) used for? |
Zometa (zoledronic acid) is used to treat high levels of calcium in the blood associated with malignancy (cancer), multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer), and bone metastases from solid tumors.

Do not take Zometa (zoledronic acid) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Zometa (zoledronic acid) or to similar medications |
What precautions should I follow when taking Zometa (zoledronic acid) ?

Before using Zometa (zoledronic acid), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have any other medical condition like liver, kidney, lung or heart disease. |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Zometa (zoledronic acid)?

A dental examination with appropriate preventive dentistry should be considered before starting treatment with Zometa (zoledronic acid). This is especially important if you have poor dental health; have cancer; are receiving chemotherapy; or are taking corticosteroids. |
What are the side effects of Zometa (zoledronic acid)?
|
|
Most severe: An allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); kidney problems (detected by blood tests); or low levels of calcium, magnesium, or phosphorus in the blood (detected by blood tests).
|
|
Most common: Flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, bone pain, or muscle or joint soreness or aches; stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; or redness or swelling at the injection site.

How should I take Zometa (zoledronic acid)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Zometa (zoledronic acid) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Zometa (zoledronic acid) should only be given by a health care provider who is experienced in the use of Zometa (zoledronic acid). If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occur, contact your health care provider at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring instant medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without talking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Zometa (zoledronic acid). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your health care provider.

How should Zometa (zoledronic acid) be stored?
|
|
Store Zometa (zoledronic acid) at controlled room temperature (between 59 to 86 degrees F) in a tight, light-resistant container. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets. Protect from excessive heat and moisture. |
