What is Zomig (zolmitriptan) used for?

Zomig (zolmitriptan) is used to treat acute migraine headaches with or without aura (flashing lights, wavy lines, dark spots) in adults. It is not to be used to prevent migraine or to treat other types of headaches (hemiplegic or basilar).

When should Zomig (zolmitriptan) not be taken?

Do not take Zomig (zolmitriptan) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Zomig (zolmitriptan) you have a history of heart disease, heart attack, or chest pain you have had a stroke you have uncontrolled high blood pressure you have other types of migraine headaches (hemiplegic, basilar, or cluster headaches) you have used ergot-containing medications or another medication similar to Zomig (zolmitriptan) within 24 hours you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the past 14 days

What precautions should I follow when taking Zomig (zolmitriptan) ?

Before using Zomig (zolmitriptan), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine (especially for depression), nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have brain or peripheral blood vessel disease if you have kidney disease if you have liver disease if you have high blood pressure if you have high cholesterol if you have diabetes if you have chest pain, heart disease, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeats if you have a family history of heart disease if you are overweight if you regularly smoke if you are a woman past menopause if you are a male over the age of 40 if you have Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome if you have a history of seizures or epilepsy if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Zomig (zolmitriptan)?

Do not use Zomig (zolmitriptan) for other types of headache, including certain unusual types of migraine and cluster headaches.

What are the side effects of Zomig (zolmitriptan)?

Most severe:  Tightness, pain, pressure, or heaviness in jaw, neck, throat, and chest; pounding in the chest; heart attack.
Most common:  Abnormal skin sensations; weakness; nausea; dizziness; pain; drowsiness; warm/cold sensations; increased sensitivity to touch.
Other:  Dry mouth; indigestion; difficulty swallowing; muscle pain; muscle weakness; sweating.

How should I take Zomig (zolmitriptan)?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Zomig (zolmitriptan) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Zomig (zolmitriptan) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Zomig (zolmitriptan) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Zomig (zolmitriptan) is intended for the relief of acute migraine attacks. It does not prevent or reduce the number of attacks. Use Zomig (zolmitriptan) only for acute migraine attacks. If the headache returns, you can take another tablet after 2 hours. If the first dose does not relieve the migraine attack, do not take a second dose unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take no more than 10 mg in a 24-hour period. Contact your health care provider at once if you experience pain or tightness of the chest or throat while using Zomig (zolmitriptan), or if the pain or tightness is severe or does not go away. Contact your health care provider at once if shortness of breath, wheezing, heart throbbing, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, skin rash or lumps, or hives occur. If you experience tingling, abnormally high body temperature, redness of the face, heaviness, pressure, drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, or sickness after using Zomig (zolmitriptan), notify your health care provider if you have symptoms you do not understand. If Zomig (zolmitriptan) has expired, throw it away. Zomig (zolmitriptan) may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Diabetes patients -- Zomig (zolmitriptan) may affect your blood sugar level. Your doctor may need to change the dose of diabetes medicine you are taking. Do not take Zomig (zolmitriptan) if you are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 2 weeks. If you are uncertain whether your other medications contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Zomig (zolmitriptan) without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Zomig (zolmitriptan). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of Zomig (zolmitriptan). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Zomig (zolmitriptan) at controlled room temperature (between 68 to 77 degrees F). Protect from heat, moisture, and light.
