What is Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) used for? |
Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) is used to manage initial genital herpes infections and certain non-life-threatening herpes simplex virus infections in patients with weakened immune systems.

What are the side effects of Zovirax Topical (acyclovir)?

Most severe: Allergic reaction including rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Most common: Swelling, pain, or itching at the application site; rash.
|
|
Other: Discomfort at the application site.

How should I take Zovirax Topical (acyclovir)?
|
How much medicine you use and how often you use it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) you are using, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) and reread it each time you get your prescription refilled. Use exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) is for external use only. Do not use Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) in or near the eyes. Therapy with Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) should start as soon as possible after the onset of signs and symptoms of herpes. Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) must thoroughly cover all lesions. A one-half inch ribbon of ointment will cover about 4 square inches. Use a finger cot or rubber glove when applying the ointment to avoid spreading infection. Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) is not a cure for herpes simplex infections. Avoid sexual intercourse when lesions are present to prevent infecting your partner. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Zovirax Topical (acyclovir). Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as possible, but not if it is almost time for the next application.

Store Zovirax Topical (acyclovir) between 59 and 77 degrees F in a dry place. Replace cap after each use. |
