What is Zovirax (acyclovir) used for? |
Zovirax (acyclovir) is used to treat genital herpes, herpes zoster (shingles), and chickenpox.

Before using Zovirax (acyclovir), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have impaired kidney or liver function if you are receiving hemodialysis if you have any other medical condition |

What are the side effects of Zovirax (acyclovir)?
|
|
Most severe: Severe allergic reaction (giant hives; rash; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); aggressive behavior; decreased consciousness; hallucinations; mania; seizures; urination problems.
|
|
Most common: Nausea/vomiting; diarrhea; headache; general body discomfort.
|
|
Other: Stomach pain; muscle aches; hair loss; flushing; rash; sensitivity to sunlight; itching; hives; changes in vision; agitation; confusion; dizziness; abnormal skin sensations; drowsiness; tremors.

How should I take Zovirax (acyclovir)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Zovirax (acyclovir) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with Zovirax (acyclovir) and reread it each time you get your prescription refilled. Take Zovirax (acyclovir) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Zovirax (acyclovir). Therapy with Zovirax (acyclovir) should start at the earliest sign or symptom of shingles or genital herpes. Zovirax (acyclovir) may not work after 72 hours past onset of shingles or genital herpes or after 24 hours past the onset of chickenpox. Zovirax (acyclovir) may not be effective in suppressing recurring genital herpes beyond 1 year. Zovirax (acyclovir) is not a cure for herpes and will not prevent the infection from spreading. Avoid sexual intercourse when sores are present to prevent infecting your partner. Zovirax (acyclovir) may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Zovirax (acyclovir) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Zovirax (acyclovir). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next appointment.
