What is Zyprexa (olanzapine) used for?

Zyprexa (olanzapine) is used short-term to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

When should Zyprexa (olanzapine) not be taken?

Do not take Zyprexa (olanzapine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Zyprexa (olanzapine)

What precautions should I follow when taking Zyprexa (olanzapine) ?

Before using Zyprexa (olanzapine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have a history of seizures if you have difficulty swallowing if you have Alzheimer's disease or dementia (impaired memory) if you smoke if you have difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate if you have narrow-angle glaucoma if you have bowel obstruction if you have thoughts of suicide if you have impaired liver or kidney function if you have Parkinson's disease if you have low blood pressure if you have a history of heart disease, heart attack, or other heart problems if you have phenylketonuria if you have any other medical conditions

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Zyprexa (olanzapine)?

Use Zyprexa (olanzapine) with caution if you have any of the following conditions: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, trouble swallowing, narrow angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), an enlarged prostate, heart irregularities, heart disease, heart failure, liver disease, or a history of heart attack, seizures, or intestinal blockage.

What are the side effects of Zyprexa (olanzapine)?

Most severe:ÿ Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); seizures; increased body heat; muscle rigidness; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; irregular pulse and blood pressure; increased heart rate; sweating; irregular heart rhythm; involuntary, uncontrolled muscle movements; tremor; fainting.
Most common:ÿ Dizziness; drowsiness; fever; back pain; chest pain; vomiting; increased appetite; heartburn; weight gain; swelling; joint pain; sleeplessness; abnormal gait; runny nose; increased cough; changes in vision; lightheadedness; restlessness; constipation; changes in personality; weakness; dry mouth; indigestion; unusual bruising.
Other:ÿ Abnormal menstruation; breast enlargement; impotence; difficulty swallowing; loss of bladder control; urinary tract infection; sore throat.

How should I take Zyprexa (olanzapine)?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Zyprexa (olanzapine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with Zyprexa (olanzapine) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Zyprexa (olanzapine) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Zyprexa (olanzapine) may be taken with or without food. Avoid situations involving high temperature or humidity. Notify your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breastfeed while taking Zyprexa (olanzapine). Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a potentially deadly syndrome associated with Zyprexa (olanzapine). Symptoms include the following: Increased body heat; muscle rigidness; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; irregular pulse and blood pressure; increased heart rate; sweating; irregular heart rhythm. Contact your doctor at once if any of these symptoms occur. Involuntary and uncontrollable muscle movements may develop in patients treated with Zyprexa (olanzapine), particularly in the elderly. The risk of developing these involuntary movements and the likelihood that they will become permanent increases with longer treatment periods and higher doses. However, it is possible to develop these symptoms after short-term treatment at low doses. Tell your doctor if you experience involuntary muscle movements of the tongue, mouth, or jaw or shuffling. Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur, especially during the first few days of taking Zyprexa (olanzapine). Lightheadedness can occur if you stand up too fast from lying or sitting. If this occurs, get up slowly, avoid sudden posture changes, and contact your health care provider. Zyprexa (olanzapine) may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medicines that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Zyprexa (olanzapine). Do not stop taking Zyprexa (olanzapine) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Zyprexa (olanzapine). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much medicine. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your health care provider at your next appointment.

Store Zyprexa (olanzapine) at controlled room temperature (between 68 to 77 degrees F). Protect from light and moisture.
