Strange Cases in Medicine - Exploding Head Syndrome

Exploding head syndrome is a medical condition that causes a person to experience a very loud noise that seems to originate from within the persons own head. The sound is often described as an explosion, roar, crashing waves, loud voices or screams, a ringing noise, or buzzing.

The noise most often occurs during sleep, but can also present itself when a person is awake. Although the sound can be extremely loud, there is no actual pain that follows an attack, and the attacks do not actually seem to cause any damage.

Exploding head syndrome, while not dangerous, is very distressing to the individual. The origin of the condition is not completely known however, some scientists believe that exploding head syndrome may be caused by stress or extreme fatigue. The condition can occur at any time during a person's life, and may only occur once or may occur frequently. However, women seem to suffer from exploding head syndrome more often than men.

Along with causing extremely loud sounds, exploding head syndrome may also cause a brief flash of light. Also, the person experiencing and episode of exploding head syndrome may feel an extreme rush of adrenaline, similar to a state of fear or panic. Although, exploding head syndrome is not directly dangerous, it can cause some individuals to develop other damaging conditions. In some serious cases, the person will become afraid to sleep and will develop insomnia.

Because exploding head syndrome is relatively harmless, and normally goes away on its own, very rarely has there been a need for medication. However, in a few cases clomipramine has been used to relieve the symptoms of the condition.

Strange Cases in Medicine - Pica

Pica is an unusual medical disorder that causes the patient to develop an appetite for non-edible substances, such as coal, rock, paper, soap, clay, etc. However, some cases have shown that the patient will only develop an unusual appetite eating things like flour, raw potatoes, starch, salt, etc. Pica gets its name from the Latin word for magpie, a bird that is said to eat almost anything.

I'm almost positive everyone has had an experience in their very early childhood where they tried, or did eat something that wasn't meant to be eaten, but at such a young age it is merely due to the fact that we haven't developed enough to recognize edible and non-edible objects. For one to have Pica, the desire to eat such objects must last for more than one month, during a time when we should be able to properly recognize the substance we are eating as edible or non-edible. Pica is especially dangerous in children. A child might start eating painted plaster that contains lead, resulting in permanent brain damage.

There hasn't been an enormous amount of research done on the topic of Pica, but some of the research that has been done suggests that pica is caused by a mineral deficiency, but there is also the possibility that Pica may be caused by a mental disorder similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Treatment for Pica can vary. Treatments range from treating mineral deficiencies to therapy and medication. Generally medication is the last resort after every other treatment has been attempted.

It would be quite strange to have an appetite for objects like chalk, rocks, and metal. The picture above is the stomach contents from a psychiatric inmate suffering from Pica.

10 Cures For Hiccups

Hiccups can be embarrassing and annoying when they happen in public. Rather than plugging your nose or waiting for it to stop, there are other ways to stop your hiccupping without being noticed.

1. Reflexology – Squeeze the ball between your thumb and forefinger on your left hand. The pain should be a distraction to your nervous system and therefore end your hiccups.

2. Empty your lungs – Expel all the air out of your lungs in one deep exhale. When your lungs feel empty, breathe deeply and steadily until the hiccups disappear (which should be in less than 60 seconds if done correctly).

3. Concentrate – Irritation of your diaphragm, or your brain thinking your diaphragm is irritated, causes hiccups. Your brain tells your diaphragm to move up and down to cure this. Thus, concentrating very hard on your diaphragms movement is said to cure your hiccups.

4. Plug your ears – Try to leave the public area (the classic restroom excuse) and then put your fingers in your ears for half a minute or press on the soft spot behind your ears. These spots are connected to the vagus nerve which is connected to the diaphragm area.

5. Stick out your tongue – Get away from the public eye and stick out your tongue. This stimulates the vocal chords to open and lets you breathe more slowly.

6. Drink! – A reason to order another drink. Take many quick sips from a glass. These metrical contractions of the esophagus help calm the diaphragm.

7. Suck a lemon – The surprise of a sour something can stop your hiccups. Invest in a sour candy to keep with you at all times and protect yourself from the embarrassment of hiccups.

8. Vinegar – Vinegar may be good for food, for cleaning, but hiccups? Swallow a teaspoon of cider vinegar and your hiccups will disappear.

9. Kiss – A long, passionate kiss can rid of your hiccups. Just choose the right partner.

10. Ice cream – The chill of ice cream, swallowed steadily, calms the diaphragm and cures hiccups, and is a nice treat.

H1N1 Vaccine Side Effects

In a recent survey it was found that many Americans are still cautious about the side effects associated with the H1N1 vaccine, including rare diseases. There are now more side effects reported, including very dangerous symptoms. Various pregnant mothers who took the swine flu vaccine reported miscarriages. This and other dangerous side effects occurred within hours to days of having the vaccine. Children who receive two H1N1 vaccines have found the 2nd injection causes more serious side effects. The 1st injection has mild side effects for both children and adults. These include redness and soreness where injected, and a runny nose. The 2nd injection side effects were fever, muscle pain, drowsiness and irritability. GlaxoSmithKline recently stated that the 2nd dose of the H1N1 shot is no longer necessary for children. This is still undecided as there is further discussion needed between GlaxoSmithKline and the European health authorities. In Taiwan, middle school students recently received H1H1 shots. 46 students were sent to the hospital because of nausea symptoms. This may be attributed to nervousness. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a common worry. There have been 6 cases which are associated with the swine flu vaccine. Guillain-Barre syndrome is where the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. It may eventually lead to death. The side effects the swine flu vaccine is most commonly reported to give a patient are pain, redness, and swelling where injected. Headaches, fevers, fatigue, and muscle aches are also somewhat common. These symptoms should go away within 2 days of the shot. To decrease the possibility of side effects one should avoid getting the vaccination on an empty stomach. If you are still concerned, stay near the location where you received your shot for 30 minutes after completion to watch for reactions.

"Don't Worry Be Happy" - 4 Ways to Help You Stay Happy This Winter

Winter tends to bring darkness, cold weather, and cause many people to become emotional wrecks. Some people suffer from frequent depression, others from seasonal depression, and everyone else just seems to get in a bad mood when there's less light out. However, there are some things everyone can do to make them feel happier.

1. Listen to Some Music – Music has a very wide range of abilities, from getting us pumped up for the big game, or calming us down so we can relax after a hard day of work. When we listen to music, endorphins are released causing that sort of happy feeling we get from sex or food.

2. Laugh – When you're in a rather foul mood laughing can sometimes be hard. However, laughing is one of the best things to cheer you up. Try inviting a group of your friends over to watch a funny movie. The chances you'll laugh increase significantly when you're with others than when you're alone. Laughing not only triggers endorphins, making you happier, but reduces specific stress hormones, and strengthens your immune system.

3. List the Things You're Thankful For – It may seem kind of weird, but occasionally when you're in a bad mood try writing down a few things you're thankful for. This may help put things into perspective for you, and help you really see how lucky you are. However, don't try this too often as it will lose its effectiveness over time. Additionally, it might not work for everyone, but it certainly couldn't hurt to try.

4. Sex –Sex causes endorphins to be released that help reduce pain, but when there is no pain present, the endorphins can cause euphoria. A healthy sex life can significantly improve your overall mood, and actually provide many health benefits, such as a reducing your stress level.

5 Ways You Can Help Keep Yourself Healthy This Winter

Personally, I've always enjoyed the winter months. I love the snow, and I don't mind the dark. I especially like the presents I get over the holiday season. However, winter is known to many as the flu season. So I thought I should offer some tips to help people stay healthy this winter season.

1. Get Lots of Sleep – Getting adequate sleep is crucial to staying healthy, yet it's one of the most overlooked ways to stay healthy. Sometimes getting enough sleep isn't always the problem. To receive the full health benefits, go to bed at an appropriate time, and try and sleep at around the same time every night if at all possible.

2. Eat Healthy – Your diet plays a huge role in your health. If you want to stay healthy during winter, you have to eat healthy. Make sure you eat at least 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit each day. Also, make sure you drink plenty of fluids.

3. Take a Multi-Vitamin
– Try to take a daily multi-vitamin to help your body stay in top flu fighting condition. Multi-vitamins are easy to take because they're daily and they can provide you with crucial vitamins you may be lacking.

4. Wash Your Hands!!!- Make sure you wash your hands on a regular basis. We're pretty filthy animals, there is bacteria everywhere and although most of it is actually okay for us, there is some that is harmful, even deadly in some cases. Washing your hands with soap and hot water frequently is one of the best ways to prevent sickness. Avoid hand sanitizer if you can because it kills almost all bacteria on your hands, but what they don't tell you is that all the good bacteria that we need is included in the tiny bacterial casualties.

5. Get a Flu Shot – Probably the best way to stay healthy is to receive a flu shot. Flu shots can help your body protect against the flu and may save you from having a winter full of tissues and a runny nose. Flu shots aren't that expensive and are definitely worth the money.

Strange Cases in Medicine - Human Werewolf Syndrome

Congenital Hypertrichosis Lanuginosa or better known as Human Werewolf Syndrome is an extremely rare condition. Since its discovery, there have only been 40 to 50 documented cases in the world. People who suffer from this condition are completely covered in hair, except on the palms of their feet and hands. The actual cause of the condition is not entirely known, but scientists do believe that the cause is mostly likely due to a mutation of a certain gene.

Although Human Werewolf Syndrome can be passed down from generation to generation, there is still about a 50/50 chance that the child will not have the condition. Unfortunately, there are currently no cures for Human Werewolf Syndrome, but there are certain methods of managing the condition.

Though the condition has been around since the Middle Ages, we still have not found a cure for it. However, we have come up with ways to manage the condition as much as possible. Some very short and temporary methods of hair loss are shaving, using hair removing creams, or using a ruff surface to remove the hair. These only last for a few days, or in some cases, a few hours. Waxing, sugaring, and threading are methods of hair removal that are temporary, but last several days or possibly several weeks.

There are a few forms of permanent hair removal, but these do not cure the person of the condition and they do pose some risks. Electrolysis and laser hair removal are methods used to permanently remove hair, but at the same time some tissue damage may be caused.

On another note, there have been those that have used their disorder to make a living. Some circus side show performers suffered from this condition. One of the most popular performers was the wolf man. Although they were perceived as "freaks" and were often described to possess animal traits, it was a way to survive.

How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

The holidays are coming around again pretty soon, and while they bring everyone together, for a short time of great food, relaxation and joy, the weight that tends to hang around afterward, due to all of those festive holiday parties is not so joyous.

How to Avoid "Putting on a Few Pounds" during the holidays:

Continue to Exercise - Don't stop your regular exercise schedule on account of the holidays, as starting again after New Year's can be difficult. If you find that your busy holiday schedule interferes with you workouts, reducing their time is much better than stopping them altogether.

Don’t Over Eat - All of the holiday party food may be overwhelming, so be sure not overeat, as it can lead to heartburn and weight gain. Eating a healthy meal before going out so that you don't arrive at an event famished will reduce your chances of over eating.

Avoid Calorie-Rich Foods - It's really about moderation. Eating is a central part of the winter holidays, and it's not fun skip out on all the holiday favorites. That being said, the common holiday foods to moderate include gravies, pastry coated appetizers, caramelized nuts and anything with high sugar content.

Limit Drinks - Alcoholic beverages are infamous for calories, in fact just three of your favorite alcoholic beverages will often add to an amount of calories equal to a regular meal. Other holiday drinks such as eggnog and gingerbread lattes are high in calories and should be drunk in moderation as well.

Sleep Well and Relax - Avoiding stress is a crucial part of avoiding weight gain, and while the holidays are often bustling with enjoyable activities, they can be stressful too! Relax with a good book by the fire, take a bath, or do some yoga; it doesn’t matter how you relax, however, it will help to alleviate stress. Getting a good sleep each night will allow you to stay awake during the day, and also help you to limit those specialty coffees.

Losing weight is a process that takes time, effort and determination. Over the winter holidays losing weight can be a challenge, to say the least, however, that's not to say it can't be done and these simple methods can help you get to where you want to be: a happy place with your weight and your holiday activities.

15 Interesting Facts about Your Health and Your Body

Take a look at these 15 interesting facts about your health and your body. Some might make you laugh, some might make you cry, and some might make you sit back and think about the meaning of life. Well maybe not the meaning of life thing, but you might be amazed at some of the things many of us don't know.

1. If you rolled a lung from a human body out flat, it would be the roughly the size of a tennis court.

2. It takes only 17 muscles to smile, but 43 to frown.

3. Motorists who talk on cell phones are more impaired than drunk drivers with blood-alcohol levels exceeding .08!

4. One quarter of the bones in your entire body are found in your feet!

5. Perspiration is odorless. The reason for the odor you produce when you sweat is due to the bacteria on the skin that creates an odor.

6. Redheads require more anesthesia to become unconscious than people with other hair colors.

7. A fetus develops fingerprints at only eighteen weeks!

8. A man once sued his doctor because he survived his cancer longer than the doctor predicted. If I were the one with cancer, I would probably be too happy to even think about suing the doctor.

9. There are about 400 different kinds of microbes that live on and in the human body.

10. Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. However, you probably shouldn't do this to lose weight as you'll suffer from severe brain damage long before you begin to notice the weight you've lost.

11. Contrary to popular beliefs, chocolate does not cause acne.

12. Fingernails grow almost 4 times faster than toenails!

13. The aorta, which is the largest artery in the body, has nearly the diameter of an average garden hose.

14. The average human body contains enough fat to make seven bars of soap. This always reminds me of the movie "Fight Club" when the two main characters make their own soap.

15. The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 ft. Maybe those Tarantino movies are realer than I thought. Either way they still rock.

Strange Cases in Medicine – Proteus Syndrome

This week’s strange case in medicine is Proteus Syndrome. Proteus Syndrome results in the overgrowth of skin and irregular bone development that is often followed by the growth of tumors over the body. The condition is extremely rare, with only about 120 people living with the condition.

Proteus Syndrome is described as a progressive condition, meaning that when a child is born with the condition it may not be apparent right away. However, as time moves on deformities begin to become fairly obvious. Although not all cases of Proteus Syndrome are diagnosed, as not all irregular growths are severe.

Unfortunately, skin, bone, and tumor growth can begin at any age. Also, the risk of an early death increase dramatically for those diagnosed with Proteus Syndrome. Many individuals suffering from Proteus Syndrome are more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism due to the malformations of the blood vessels. Furthermore, carrying around all the extra weight, caused by the condition, can be hazardous in itself. Arthritis and muscle pain are common for those with Proteus Syndrome, although other, more fatal outcomes are possible.

The cause of the condition is still undetermined. Without a cause for the condition it becomes very hard to treat the condition. As of today there is still no cure. Those that suffer from severe problems due to their enlarged limbs may require amputations.

The Health Benefits of Ginger

The ginger plant, indigenous to Southeast Asia, has been used by herbalists for thousands of years to ease various medical ailments. The root of the plant is most commonly used in cuisine, and is known for its health benefits just as well as its delicious flavor and aroma. Ginger is a natural source of potassium, magnesium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, copper, gingerol and its anti-oxidant properties make it a well rounded and beneficial herb.

Natural Blood Thinner - Ginger’s natural composition acts as a blood thinner when consumed. If you are currently taking blood thinners, talk to your doctor before consuming vast amounts of ginger.

Ease Nausea and Vomiting – Ginger has been proven to reduce nausea and vomiting associated with flu-like symptoms, morning sickness and post-surgery nausea.

Reduces Motion Sickness - Ginger is an excellent alternative to many prescription and non-prescription drugs designed to prevent or ease motion sickness, because of its lack of side effects.

Reduce Inflammation - Ginger has been shown to reduce inflammation associated with arthritis when consumed and used as massage oil.

Positive Effects in Ovarian Cancer - Ginger has been shown in some studies to have extremely positive effects in ovarian cancer patients.

Pain Relief - Ginger is an effective treatment for menstrual and stomach cramps, often with the same effects as Advil or ibuprofen.

Ginger is easily accessible; it can be found at your local supermarket in root, powder and extract form. It is additionally effortless to add into your diet, it’s great in herbal teas, and as an additive in meals. But remember to consume your ginger in moderation, because too much of good thing can turn out badly.

Strange Cases in Medicine – Moebius Syndrome

This week's strange case in medicine is Moebius Syndrome. Moebius Syndrome is a very rare condition that is most commonly associated with facial paralysis. Those that suffer from Moebius Syndrome are unable to smile, frown, blink, move their eyes side to side, and have a hard time swallowing. Additionally, some also experience physical problems in other body parts.

I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to be unable to produce any sort of facial expression. Those with Moebius Syndrome can’t express joy, or sadness. They are unable to share any sort of emotion through their facial expressions.

Furthermore, this sort of condition must really test the parents of a child born with Moebius Syndrome. Because of the effects of the condition, caring for a person, especially a small child, with this type of condition can be extremely challenging. I'm sure the toll on some parents gets so hard they develop depression.

Unfortunately the exact cause of Moebius Syndrome is unknown. However, many symptoms of the condition are known, and some people with the condition have been able to have surgery or receive therapy to improve functions originally damaged by the condition. For example, in certain cases, there has been surgery to transfer nerves and muscles to the corners of the mouth to allow the person to have the ability to smile.

That is all until next week. Look out for the next strange case in medicine.

5 Simple and Natural Solutions to Depression

It is predicted that by next year depression will be the second largest illness after heart disease. Depression affects people of all ages. It can be as trivial as being gloomy when the weather is bad or as traumatic as suicide thoughts, attempts, or completions. Here are 5 natural ways to alleviate the minor cases of depression.

1. Get a Pet - Anything you can pet can help you deal with depression. The simple thing of stroking an animal can help compose you. If you are allergic to animals there are breeds of dogs which do not provoke any allergic effects.

2. Exercise - As unappealing as it sounds, exercise can be a great natural solution to depression. With exercise your heart rate is increased and endorphins, which create positive feelings, are released in your brain. Exercise also takes your mind off negative thoughts by preoccupying your mind and body.

3. Surround yourself with happy people - Have you ever heard the saying “You are who you hang out with”? Depression is contagious. If a person suffering from depression spends time with negative people, their condition may worsen; therefore surround yourself with positive people.

4. Set a goal for yourself – To get your life to move forward in a positive direction, set a goal to achieve. Take the time to write down the goal. This will be a good, constant reminder for you, and will allow you to see how far you have progressed from the beginning. Even if you do not reach your ultimate goal, you will be proud of how far you have developed.

5. Eat healthy - Fish and other sea foods are a good for depression as omega 3 and fatty acids have been said to reduce the symptoms of depression substantially. Try to keep a healthy food balance and avoid skipping meals.

If your symptoms of depression persist, there are widely used medications available for everyone.
