Dogs Can Help Improve Your Fitness

Dogs are great companions. They can be a handful sometimes, but they give you a lot back in return. If you’ve always wanted a dog, but just couldn’t get the motivation to find your perfect companion or if you are a child and living with your parents trying to convince them that they should get a dog, then I have some great news (especially for the kids, parents always need that extra little bit of convincing).

Research conducted by the University of Missouri found a significant increase in the improvement of fitness in people who walk dogs. For any kids that are reading that means you can either tell your mom or dad that they’ll become healthier, or you may tell them that you will be getting more exercise when you walk the dog (even though this is probably a lie because I know all kids say, “Oh, but mom and dad, I’ll take care of the dog.”

The University research showed that out of the 54 adults that participated in the study, those that walked dogs were more likely to exercise on a regular basis, while those that chose to walk with a human companion were significantly more likely to make up various excuses to get out of their walks.

Additionally, the overall walking speed of people that walked dogs increased an astounding 28%! Not only are people with dogs exercising more regularly, it appears that they are exercising more efficiently too.

Furthermore, if you find that you just don’t have the time for a dog (they’re require a lot of love and attention) there are other ways you can help. If you love dogs, but are unable to get your own due to either financial or time constraints there is always the animal shelters. If you get some spare time somewhere in your schedule you could drive, or bus down to your local animal shelter and volunteer to walk a dog. You get the exercise you need and you feel great about helping out.

There you have it, another great reason why animal companions, in this case dogs, are so important.

Strange Cases in Medicine – Moebius Syndrome

This week’s strange case in medicine is Moebius Syndrome. Moebius Syndrome is a very rare condition that is most commonly associated with facial paralysis. Those that suffer from Moebius Syndrome are unable to smile, frown, blink, move their eyes side to side, and have a hard time swallowing. Additionally, some also experience physical problems in other body parts.

I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to be unable to produce any sort of facial expression. Those with Moebius Syndrome can’t express joy, or sadness. They are unable to share any sort of emotion through their facial expressions.

Furthermore, this sort of condition must really test the parents of a child born with Moebius Syndrome. Because of the effects of the condition, caring for a person, especially a small child, with this type of condition can be extremely challenging. I’m sure the toll on some parents gets so hard they develop depression.

Unfortunately the exact cause of Moebius Syndrome is unknown. However, many symptoms of the condition are known, and some people with the condition have been able to have surgery or receive therapy to improve functions originally damaged by the condition. For example, in certain cases, there has been surgery to transfer nerves and muscles to the corners of the mouth to allow the person to have the ability to smile.

Man Wrongly Diagnosed As Comatose For 23 Years

Imagine being trapped inside of a body, unable to move, speak, or do anything. This is the exact way Belgian man, Rom Houben must have felt. Houben was diagnosed as comatose 23 years ago, but only recently have doctors realized a misdiagnosis was made. Using a specialized brain scan, that was not available when Houben was diagnosed, doctors were able to see that there was a level of consciousness.

Houben has been provided with the equipment needed for him to communicate. With the help of a speech therapist, Houben typed a message that expressed his frustration, but how he is thankful for his family. However, many are skeptical that it is really Houben communicating. His speech therapist says she can feel his hand guiding her with a small amount of pressure, and that when she is going towards a wrong letter Houben’s hand offers some resistance.

A bioethics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Arthur Caplan discusses his thoughts on Houben’s communication. “That’s called ‘facilitated communication.’ That is Ouija board stuff. It’s been discredited time and time again. When people look at it, it’s usually the person doing the pointing who’s doing the messages, not the person they claim they are helping.”

Whether or not Houben is really communicating isn’t the biggest thing right now. The fact that after 23 years of being diagnosed as comatose, Houben has received the proper diagnosis could definitely be a comforting feeling for the family.
