5 Ways to Deal with Anger

Recently, I've been giving a lot of thought to anger problems and ways to manage anger. I, personally don't have an anger problem (at least I don’t think I do), but one of my friends, who will remain nameless (KJ), might have a tiny anger problem. Let's just say he punched a hole through his door after the Indianapolis Colts lost the Super bowl (that was the second door he broke in the span of two weeks). Needless to say, he may have to find some way to vent this anger.

1. Think Before You Act – As soon as you notice your anger building, try to really think about why you're angry. Sometimes we (yes even me) become angered over simple things. By taking an extra few seconds to assess the situation, you may be able to calm yourself.

2. Recognize Your Anger – Before you can even begin to deal with your anger, you need to be able to realize when you are beginning to become angry.

3. Distract Yourself – By taking your mind off of something, you can find peace. I've seen many people use many different techniques to distract their minds from their anger. This could be simply squeezing a stress ball or putting a rubber band on your wrist, so you can snap the band to focus your mind on the minor and brief pain on your wrist.

4. Vent – For some people, preventing anger just doesn't appear to be possible and they have to release their aggression. If this is you, try to USE your aggression in a beneficial or safe environment. I have a punching bag at home that I beat up every time I'm angry. I get some exercise in, release all the built up rage, and I'm too tired to even think about being angry by the end. Playing a sport is an excellent form of anger management.

5. Don't Sleep On It – I tried to go to bed angry for many years thinking it would be better in the morning, but this just led to me being even angrier. I find that if you're angry, it's better to deal with it quickly instead of sleeping on it. If it's late, try writing down what made you angry and why. You'll probably end up writing more than you first intended and will most likely go completely off topic, but you'll essentially clear your mind or at least forget about your anger.

Dogs Can Help Improve Your Fitness

Dogs are great companions. They can be a handful sometimes, but they give you a lot back in return. If you've always wanted a dog, but just couldn't get the motivation to find your perfect companion or if you are a child and living with your parents trying to convince them that they should get a dog, then I have some great news (especially for the kids, parents always need that extra little bit of convincing).

Research conducted by the University of Missouri found a significant increase in the improvement of fitness in people who walk dogs. For any kids that are reading that means you can either tell your mom or dad that they'll become healthier, or you may tell them that you will be getting more exercise when you walk the dog (even though this is probably a lie because I know all kids say, "Oh, but mom and dad, I'll take care of the dog."

The University research showed that out of the 54 adults that participated in the study, those that walked dogs were more likely to exercise on a regular basis, while those that chose to walk with a human companion were significantly more likely to make up various excuses to get out of their walks.

Additionally, the overall walking speed of people that walked dogs increased an astounding 28%! Not only are people with dogs exercising more regularly, it appears that they are exercising more efficiently too.

Furthermore, if you find that you just don't have the time for a dog (they're require a lot of love and attention) there are other ways you can help. If you love dogs, but are unable to get your own due to either financial or time constraints there is always the animal shelters. If you get some spare time somewhere in your schedule you could drive, or bus down to your local animal shelter and volunteer to walk a dog. You get the exercise you need and you feel great about helping out.

There you have it, another great reason why animal companions, in this case dogs, are so important.

5 Ways to Reduce Stress

Try Writing - Write about everything you think is causing you stress. Write about all those little things that annoy you, agitate you. Write about something that happened that made you angry, or sad. Write about something that you find pleasure in, maybe a short story with a cliché happy ending. Just write for the sake of writing, it might take your mind off the thing(s) that make you stressed out.

Talk It Out - Find someone you know you can trust and who is a good listener who won't judge you. Then let it all out. Talk about that thing at work that you find frustrating, like that paper that your boss just won't accept. Talk about something that made you sad, cry if you have to. Get angry if you must, just don't keep all the emotion bottled inside you, it has a way of just erupting at the most inopportune moments.

Exercise - Getting regular exercise is one of, if not the best way to relieve stress. It allows you to have a physical outlet for all that stress that's been bringing you down. Stretching will help with muscle tension and many people find stretching relaxing. Why not work on some deep breathing at the same time to help you relax.

Eat Some Chocolate - Chocolate makes you happy and when you are stressed out being happy is the one thing in the world you need. Not only will chocolate lighten your mood, it tastes really good too.

Listen To Music - Music is such a powerful tool. There is a lot of music that will help you calm down and relax. Even though it might not be your preferred type of music try listening to something slower or more mellow. Although it is a little bit weird it does work. I personally am a rock and metal music fan. However, sometimes it's good to listen to something a bit slower. Even if you're not into going to something like the sound of ocean waves you can still go more for a soft rock song. Maybe one of the slower songs from the groups "Muse," or "Red Hot Chili Peppers."

Trying to get into shape isn't always the easiest thing to do. You have probably tried sports like football, hockey, soccer, and many others, but simply find you're no good, or are constantly getting injured.
