4 Healthy Alternatives to Popcorn

If you're like me than you have to have some popcorn whenever you decide to go out and rent a movie. However, if you haven’t already noticed, popcorn isn't the best food for your body to be digesting all the time. Once in a while it's okay, but when you have it 2-3 times a week, you might want to consider switching to something else. The good news for you (and me) is that there are healthy alternatives to popcorn.

Cauliflower – Cauliflower is a great alternative to popcorn as it is significantly healthier than popcorn. Additionally, it has a similar feel to popcorn if you break the cauliflower into pieces. You can decide to eat cauliflower raw (the way I like it) or you can cook it and even use some dips or seasonings.

Trail Mix – Go out and look for you own ingredients to make your personal brand of trail mix. Make sure your trail mix is unsalted though. By purchasing your own foods for trail mix, you'll save money in the long run, and you'll be able to decide everything that goes into you trail mix. Ideas – unsalted peanuts, unsweetened chocolate chips, dried fruit, etc.

Cherry tomatoes or grapes – cherry tomatoes or grapes are a very good alternative to your usual buttery delight. These alternatives are healthy, significantly healthier than popcorn, and will probably make you forget that you're not eating popcorn. By the time the movie starts, you probably won't notice or care that you're not having popcorn.

Apple slices with almond butter – This is one of my favorite things to eat, not just as an alternative to popcorn, but just in general. Apple slices with almond butter are a very healthy choice that will satisfy your need to eat something that's crunchy, but also salty and sweet. Hopefully one or more of these things can help you achieve a healthier life. If none of these work you could always try just doing something else with your hands, such as knitting, maybe even fidgeting with a pen or pencil.

Helping America Get Healthy

If you've ever looked at the food pyramid to get an idea of what to eat then you may have noticed how it may be difficult to really determine what to eat and how much. What about looking at the food pyramid and not knowing what you should eat that fits into these categories? Well thankfully there is a program that solves both of these problems. A program called MyPyramid can help you figure out how many calories you should be eating, how much of each food group you should be eating, and what types of meals fit into each food group.

This program will help you watch what you eat. You can even use the program to plan out a weeks worth of meals. You can definitely see if you're overeating in any food group or even under eating (vegetables). If the majority of people knew and used this type of program on a regular basis then maybe America wouldn't be suffering from such a large obesity problem.

With things like McDonald's it is really easy to give in to the temptation, especially when fast food restaurants are so convenient. However, people need to take things in moderation. I'm not going to say never have McDonald's (though it would probably help a lot), but don't eat McDonald's all the time. Maybe once a month, twice if you really crave it. This goes for all junk food not just fast food.

Next time you get a craving for a snack eat an apple instead of the chocolate bar. Apples still have sugars in them, but they're healthier then a chocolate bar. Use your will power to stay away from all the crap that is very available and heavily advertised. If you have any sort of sports hero, perhaps a fighter, a hockey player, or a basketball player, then try to remember this. These guys don't eat unhealthy foods. These are top athletes, many of them measure each meal or snack that they eat. Very rarely do you see a professional athlete eating at McDonald's Even when they do have the occasional Big Mac (Anderson Silva) they work their butt off to burn the calories. Most of us have desk jobs or a job that requires no to minimal physical endurance or strength when compared to some athletes.

Just try and be healthier, all America needs is some will power and a little helpful motivation to become healthy again.

5 Foods for your Brain

1. Water - Hydrate your brain by having sufficient water intake. Your brain is about 80% water and proper hydration will improve your ability to function and prevent headaches due to dehydration

2. Fish Oil - Fish contains high levels of Omega 3 which make up a lot of the gray matter in the brain. The fat in the brain plays a huge role in how our brains function, and the healthier the gray matter, the healthier the brain. Omega 3 is also said to affect your emotional balances making you feel happier.

3. Red Wine and Blueberries - You don't have to eat them together, but try to include one of them regularly in your diet. Red Wine and Blueberries contain antioxidants which rule out free-radicals from the body keeping it healthy. Research has also found that a regular intake of antioxidant rich foods can reduce the risk of developing cognitive impairment.

4. Munchies - Plan to eat healthy snacks throughout the day. This keeps the brain nourished and alert. But be careful and don't over-indulge. Small light snacks like veggies and dip or crackers and cheese are ideal.

5. Chocolate - This one is questionable, but it's true. Dark chocolate contains high levels of iron and is healthier for you than milk chocolate or white chocolate. It has even been known to improve memory!

Why Should I Take Multivitamins?

Kudos to those who are devoted multivitamin consumers, and to those who are not – it might do you well to consider slotting them into your daily routine.

A multivitamin is a supplement intended to improve your diet via providing you with the essential vitamins and minerals needed by the body to stay healthy. They are not only needed and used by those with dietary imbalances or specific dietary needs, but by those who are appreciative of their overall well-being… and also the rest of us, who neglect the importance of eating natural food that takes longer than 5 microwave-minutes to prepare.

It has been reported that those who take multivitamins daily noticed a positive change in their overall health. Specific vitamins and minerals allow us to benefit in different ways. A balanced daily intake of vitamins and minerals ensures overall stability for your body. In our highly demanding lifestyles, there are many things that hinder our ability to relax and cause stress. Although almost all vitamins have the uncanny ability to combat stress, vitamin B12 is proven to be the most effective in reducing stress. Vitamin B12 helps your body produce serotonin, (a feel-good chemical) that travels directly to the brain.

Multivitamins usually contain a number of fundamental vitamins such as vitamin A, C, D, E, K and B12. These vitamins are the basis of good health and if our body were to have a major deficiency of any of them, the effects would be quickly recognized. Some multivitamins also contain minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium, which all do their part in ensuring optimum physical and mental vitality. Taking a daily multivitamin is a small contribution to the body that anyone can benefit from.

Watch Out!! – Some multivitamin formulas can contain "tag-along" ingredients picked up from the manufacturing plant that may not be the most favorable products to be taking regularly. Make sure to research and choose a reputable multivitamin like Centrum, VitaVim, Maltlevol (liquid), or One-A-Day (men’s or women’s), which were found to be free of extra ingredients. If you are pregnant, on prescription medicine, or just don't know what vitamins are best for your body, seek advice from your healthcare professional.
