5 Ways to Deal with Anger

Recently, I've been giving a lot of thought to anger problems and ways to manage anger. I, personally don't have an anger problem (at least I don’t think I do), but one of my friends, who will remain nameless (KJ), might have a tiny anger problem. Let's just say he punched a hole through his door after the Indianapolis Colts lost the Super bowl (that was the second door he broke in the span of two weeks). Needless to say, he may have to find some way to vent this anger.

1. Think Before You Act – As soon as you notice your anger building, try to really think about why you're angry. Sometimes we (yes even me) become angered over simple things. By taking an extra few seconds to assess the situation, you may be able to calm yourself.

2. Recognize Your Anger – Before you can even begin to deal with your anger, you need to be able to realize when you are beginning to become angry.

3. Distract Yourself – By taking your mind off of something, you can find peace. I've seen many people use many different techniques to distract their minds from their anger. This could be simply squeezing a stress ball or putting a rubber band on your wrist, so you can snap the band to focus your mind on the minor and brief pain on your wrist.

4. Vent – For some people, preventing anger just doesn't appear to be possible and they have to release their aggression. If this is you, try to USE your aggression in a beneficial or safe environment. I have a punching bag at home that I beat up every time I'm angry. I get some exercise in, release all the built up rage, and I'm too tired to even think about being angry by the end. Playing a sport is an excellent form of anger management.

5. Don't Sleep On It – I tried to go to bed angry for many years thinking it would be better in the morning, but this just led to me being even angrier. I find that if you're angry, it's better to deal with it quickly instead of sleeping on it. If it's late, try writing down what made you angry and why. You'll probably end up writing more than you first intended and will most likely go completely off topic, but you'll essentially clear your mind or at least forget about your anger.

Tips for a good night's sleep

The brain is okay at functioning on only a few hours of sleep, but it will not live up to its potential. Having a lack of sleep can actually cause your mental, physical, and even emotional health to pay. You will have a harder time doing simple tasks when you are sleep deprived, and may start to get moody with those around you. In order to keep yourself healthy and maintain your relationships, make sure you are getting enough sleep!

Here are some tips to help you get a better night's sleep:

Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule - go to bed and wake up at around the same times every day.

Exercise regularly - Regular exercise will help you use up more energy and reduce your stress levels helping you sleep better.

Wind down before bed
- Try to do something relaxing before going to bed like reading a book or having a bath. This will tell your body that you are ready to sleep and ease you of stress that could keep you up at night. Avoid sitting on the computer before going to bed - it may hinder your ability to fall asleep peacefully.

Stay Healthy - A healthy diet will help you sleep well. Make sure you have plenty of calcium and magnesium in your diet. Try taking multivitamins regularly to improve your overall health.

Sleep: The Big Factor

Most students when they move to go live in dorms at University start getting less and less sleep. Obviously this is a very large problem for many students, not just for grades, but for their health too.

Student life on campus can be very hectic, very busy, and very fun. All of this is true, but you have to learn how to balance. Sleep deprivation is a very troubling problem almost all students living on campus face. Sleep deprivation can make students more likely to develop depression, become very irritable, and worsen existing conditions such as diabetes, chronic fatigue and even asthma.

Many of the students start to see a drop in marks. This can be attributed partially due to the higher expectations, but zoning out during class, and being too worn out to study can play a big part. Students should try to go to sleep before midnight whenever they have class the next morning. If they want to stay up and party, they should try and plan it when they have a day off after a night of partying.

Some of the kids, well maybe not kids anymore, but adults now, actually start skipping class because of their need for sleep. This will show a significant drop in grades at the least. Most that continue to skip class will see themselves getting set up for a failing grade in their course. University students need to remember there really isn't an alternative to sleep, and adequate sleep is one of the most important things. Bring ear plugs if you must, but go to bed early, or at least earlier.
