What is Ogen used for?

This medicine is used to treat or prevent a variety of conditions due to menopause (hot flashes, vaginal itching, burning, dryness); to prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones); and for estrogen replacement therapy after failure or surgical removal of the ovaries.

When should Ogen not be taken?

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine you are pregnant you have breast cancer (except in selected patients) or cancers that are estrogen-dependent you have abnormal vaginal bleeding of no known cause you have blood clots

What precautions should I follow when taking Ogen?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are plan on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical conditions

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Ogen?

This medicine may increase the risk of cancer of the uterus. Do not use if you are pregnant. Estrogens represent a group of several female hormones. Normally the ovaries produce and release several natural estrogens until menopause occurs. All estrogens produce similar effects. This medicine plays a key role in the development and normal function of the reproductive system (including the vagina, uterus or womb, fallopian tubes and breasts) and secondary sex characteristics(eg, pubic hair) of women. This medicine also assists in the development and maintenance of strong bones.

What are the side effects of Ogen?

Most severe: Allergic reactions and rashes, chloasma, hemorrhagic eruption, itching, erythema nodosum, and erythema multiforme, pigmentation of the skin, loss of scalp hair, breakthrough bleeding, spotting and withdrawal bleeding, increased cervical mucus, endometrial hyperplasia, reactivation of endometriosis.

Most common:  Changes in menstrual flow; absence of menstruation; unusual vaginal secretions; breast tenderness, enlargement, or secretion; nausea; vomiting; stomach cramps; bloating; yellowing of skin or eyes; hair loss; rash; hives; intolerance to contact lenses; vision problems; severe headaches; dizziness; depression; tremors; weight changes; abnormal blood glucose (diabetics); swelling; changes in sexual desire; spotty darkening of the skin, especially the face.

Other: Aggravation of migraine headaches, mental depression, increase or decrease of libido, increase in blood pressure

How should I take Ogen?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Contact your doctor if yellowing of the skin or eyes, abnormal vaginal bleeding, calf or chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headaches or vomiting, dizziness, faintness, vision changes, weakness or numbness of arms or legs, coughing up blood, breast lumps, or pain, swelling or tenderness in the stomach occurs. May cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing until tolerance is known. Use nonhormonal birth-control measures to avoid birth defects. Estrogen may increase the risk of endometrial cancer. Your doctor may prescribe another hormone (progestin) to decrease the risk. Women taking this medicine should examine their breasts regularly. Do not stop taking this medication without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medication. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor.

How should Ogen be stored?

Store at 59 to 86 degrees F.
