What is Aldactazide/Spironolactone/Hctz used for?

This medicine is used to treat high blood pressure and swelling and fluid accumulation associated with certain medical conditions, including pregnancy, congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease that does not respond to other treatments.

When should Aldactazide/Spironolactone/Hctz not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications (eg, sulfanamides) you are unable to urinate you have kidney or liver problems you have high potassium levels

What precautions should I follow when taking Aldactazide/Spironolactone/Hctz?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have impaired kidney or liver function if you have diabetes if you have lupus if you have gout if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Aldactazide/Spironolactone/Hctz?

This medication should only be used for the conditions described in the Indications section. Avoid any unnecessary use. This medicine has been shown to cause tumors in rats. This medicine should not be used in the initial treatment of high blood pressure.

What are the side effects of Aldactazide/Spironolactone/Hctz?

Most severe:  Yellowing of the skin or eyes; interrupted breathing; allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, and tongue).

Most common:  Weakness; diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; cramps; constipation; stomach irritation; loss of appetite; sensitivity to sunlight; fever; involuntary muscle movements; feeling of a whirling motion; abnormal skin sensations; dizziness; headache; restlessness; blurred vision; drowsiness; confusion; lack of energy; lung infection; itching; inability to achieve or maintain an erection; irregular menstrual bleeding; fever; enlarged salivary gland.

Other:  Sudden joint pain; breast enlargement.

How should I take Aldactazide/Spironolactone/Hctz?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Avoid potassium supplements and foods containing high levels of potassium, including salt substitutes. Do not take this medicine with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs, or lithium. This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Contact your doctor if any of the following occur: Dry mouth; thirst; weakness; lack of energy; drowsiness; restlessness; muscle pains or cramps; muscle fatigue; dizziness; lightheadedness; infrequent urination; fast heartbeat; nausea; vomiting. Diabetic patients - Your doctor may need to change your dosage of diabetes medication. This medicine may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking this medication without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medication. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
