What is Brethine/Terbutaline used for?

This medicine prescribed for the prevention and relief of bronchial spasms in asthma. This medication is also used for the relief of bronchial spasm associated with bronchitis and emphysema

When should Brethine/Terbutaline not be taken?

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to this or similar medicines or to any ingredient present in this medicine.

What precautions should I follow when taking Brethine/Terbutaline?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine like antidepressant drugs known as MAO inhibitors (Nardil, Parnate, others), beta blockers (blood pressure medications such as Inderal and Tenormin), diuretics (water pills, such as Lasix or HydroDIURIL), other bronchodilators such as Proventil and Ventolin, tricyclic antidepressant drugs such as Elavil and Tofranil, if you are taking any herbal products, if you are taking blood thinners if you have stomach problems if you have peptic ulcers if you have any other medical condition like liver or kidney function impairment, heart ot lung problem, if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or an overactive thyroid gland, or if you have had seizures at any time.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Brethine/Terbutaline?

When taking this medicine, you should not use other asthma medications before checking with your doctor.

What are the side effects of Brethine/Terbutaline?

Most severe: Anxiety, dry mouth, muscle cramps, allergic reaction or a worsening of a bronchial spasm,

Most common: Chest discomfort, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, drowsiness, fast, fluttery heartbeat, flushed feeling, headache, increased heart rate, nausea, nervousness, pain at injection site, rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, vomiting, weakness

Other: Inflamed blood vessels

How should I take Brethine/Terbutaline?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
