What is Crixivan/Indinavir used for?

This medicine is used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

When should Crixivan/Indinavir not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications.

What precautions should I follow when taking Crixivan/Indinavir?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you are taking blood thinners if you have stomach problems if you have peptic ulcers if you have any other medical condition like liver or kidney function impairment or heart problem if you have diabetes or high blood sugar, if you have hemophilia, high blood cholesterol, lipids or triglycerides if you have a history of kidney stones, pancreatitis, liver disease or an unusual or allergic reaction to indinavir, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Crixivan/Indinavir?

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical treatment immediately. This medicine is not a cure for HIV infection, and it does not reduce the risk of transmission of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Therefore, you should continue to avoid practices that could spread HIV.

What are the side effects of Crixivan/Indinavir?

Most severe: Blood in the urine, difficulty or pain passing urine, pain in the back or kidney, redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, severe dizziness, skin rash, unusual tiredness or weakness, yellowing of skin or eyes

Most common: Acid reflux, back pain, changes in taste, dizziness, drowsiness, dry skin, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness or weakness

How should I take Crixivan/Indinavir?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine. Try to drink at least 6 glasses of water a day (48 ounces). If you notice pain or difficulty passing urine, call your health care provider immediately. Do not take antacids within 1 hour of taking this medicine. Antacids may decrease the amount of this medicine you absorb.
