What is Elmiron/Pentosan polysulfate used for?

This medicine is for the relief of bladder pain or discomfort due to bladder inflammation.

What precautions should I follow when taking Elmiron/Pentosan polysulfate?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition, especially if you have an underlying possibility of bleeding

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Elmiron/Pentosan polysulfate?

Safety and effectiveness of this medicine in children and adolescents below the age of 18 years have not been established. This medicine should be kept out of the reach of children.

What are the side effects of Elmiron/Pentosan polysulfate?

Most severe: This medicine is usually well tolerated.

Most common:  Hair loss; diarrhea; nausea; headache; rash; indigestion.

Other: Edema, pelvic pain, malaise, sinusitis, sweating, gastritis, leukopenia, depression, rhinitis, lacrimation, angina pectoris, chronic myelogenous leukemia, prostate cancer, loss of appetite, subarachnoid hemorrhage, epistaxis, gum hemorrhage, menorrhagia, hematuria.

How should I take Elmiron/Pentosan polysulfate?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount andperor frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take this medicine with water at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. You should be rechecked by your health care provider after 3 months of taking this medicine. If improvements are not seen, this medicine may be continued for another 3 months. This medicine may cause prolonged bleeding. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
