What is Lodine/Etodolac used for?

This medicine is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis(degenerative bone disease). It is also used to help relieve pain.

When should Lodine/Etodolac not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to sulfa medicines you have experienced asthma, hives, or an allergic reaction after taking similar medicines or aspirin if you have gastrointestinal disease like peptic ulcer, gastritis, enteritis, ulcerative colotis

What precautions should I follow when taking Lodine/Etodolac?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have advanced kidney disease if you are taking blood thinners or have a blood disorder if you are taking water pills if you have impaired kidney or liver function if you have a history of fluid retention if you have high blood pressure if you have heart disease or failure if you have a history of asthma if you have a history of peptic ulcer or intestinal bleeding if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Lodine/Etodolac?

This medicine may cause severe or fatal peptic ulceration, perforation and gastrointestinal bleeding. This medicine should be taken with food

What are the side effects of Lodine/Etodolac?

Most severe:  Severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); excessive bleeding.

Most common:  Stomach pain; diarrhea; gas; dizziness; nausea; upset stomach; weakness; general body discomfort; fluid retention; swelling of the legs and feet; indigestion.

Other:  Chills; fever; constipation; dark, bloody stools; vomiting; depression; nervousness; itching; rash; blurred vision; ringing in the ears; painful urination; frequent urination.

How should I take Lodine/Etodolac?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Avoid taking aspirin or similar medicines (such as ibuprofen) while taking this medicine unless directed to do so by your health care provider. Do not use this medicine if you have experienced asthma, runny nose with or without nasal polyps, or severe tightness in the chest after taking aspirin or similar medications. Women who are in their last trimester of pregnancy should not take this medicine as it may harm the developing fetus. Contact your health care provider at once if signs or symptoms of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach, such as stomach pain or blood in the stools occur. Contact your health care provider at once if rash, unexplained weight gain, or swelling occur. Contact your doctor at once if signs of an allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue) occur. This medicine may cause dizziness or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy if you are taking this medicine long-term. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking with your health care provider. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not use more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of this medicine. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your health care provider.
