What is Surmontil/Trimipramine used for?
This medicine is used for the treatment of depression

Store at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets.

When should Surmontil/Trimipramine not be taken?
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications if you have just had a heart attack, or acute congestive heart failure or if you are also taking a MAO inhibitor (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine) or has taken one within the last two weeks
What precautions should I follow when taking Surmontil/Trimipramine?
Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking or planning to take any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition if you have high blood pressure
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Surmontil/Trimipramine?
This medicine particularly when taken in high doses, can cause abnormal heart rhythms. Therefore, trimipramine should be taken with caution by seniors or people with a history of heart disease. This medicine may impair the mental or physical abilities required for the performance of potentially hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery.
What are the side effects of Surmontil/Trimipramine?
Most severe: Blurred vision, confusion or delirium, constipation (especially for seniors), decreased sexual ability, difficulty speaking or swallowing eye pain, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat (pounding, racing, skipping), hallucinations, loss of balance control, mask-like face, nervousness or restlessness, numbness or tingling sensation in arms and legs, problems urinating, shakiness or trembling, shuffling walk, slowed movements, stiffness of arms and legs
Most common: Dizziness, drowsiness, dryness of mouth, increased appetite (may include a craving for sweets), nausea, tiredness or weakness (mild), unpleasant taste, weight gain diarrhea, headache, heartburn, increased sweating, trouble sleeping, vomiting
Other: Anxiety, breast enlargement (both males and females), hair loss, inappropriate secretion of milk (females), increased sensitivity to sunlight, irritability, muscle twitching, red or brownish spots on skin, ringing, buzzing, or other unexplained s
How should I take Surmontil/Trimipramine?
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
