What is Ticlid/Ticlopidine used for?

This medicine is used to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke. It should only be used by patients who do not respond to treatment with aspirin or who are allergic to aspirin.

When should Ticlid/Ticlopidine not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine you have a history of blood clotting disorders you have a history of TTP or aplastic anemia you have active bleeding disorders, such as peptic ulcers or bleeding in the bra

What precautions should I follow when taking Ticlid/Ticlopidine?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you are at increased risk of bleeding due to trauma or surgery if you have bleeding lesions if you have kidney problems if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Ticlid/Ticlopidine?

This medicine can cause life-threatening blood disorders. Lab tests will be required to monitor treatment. Be sure to keep appointments.

What are the side effects of Ticlid/Ticlopidine?

Most severe:  Fever; weakness; pale skin; pinpoint dots or rash on the skin; dark urine; light-colored stools; yellowing of the skin or eyes; increased bleeding; severe allergic reaction (giant hives; rash; chest tightness; difficulty breathing; swelling

Most common:  Diarrhea; rash; nausea; vomiting; stomach pain.

Other:  Indigestion.

How should I take Ticlid/Ticlopidine?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Take this medicine with food or directly after a meal to lessen the chance of stomach discomfort. If you are scheduled for surgery, notify your health care provider and dentist that you are taking this medicine. Do not take any other medication without notifying your health care provider that you are taking this medicine. Stop taking this medicine and contact your health care provider at once if yellowing of the skin or eyes, pinpoint dots or rash on the skin, pale color, fever, weakness on a side of the body, difficulty speaking; seizures; light-colored stools, or dark or bloody urine occur. If rash, diarrhea, nausea, stomach discomfort or pain persistently occurs, contact your health care provider. It will take longer to stop bleeding while taking this medicine. Report any unusual bleeding to your health care provider. Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medication. Do not stop taking this medication without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have used too much of this medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next appointment.
