Common Medications for Cholesterol: Crestor and Lipitor

lipitor-vs-crestorWhen it comes to lowering cholesterol, there are two drugs that stand out – Crestor and Lipitor. Both of them work quite well, but definitely have their nuisances. In the following sections, we’ll break down exactly what those are so that you can make a better choice when choosing between the two.

Overview of Crestor and Lipitor

Both Crestor and Lipitor are quite effective at clearing away approximately 1% of artery-clogging plague in patients experiencing heart problems. Both drugs also work very well at lowering “bad” cholesterol (LDL) as well as raising HDL levels. While there doesn’t seem to be any differences between the drugs, there are some things to consider that will help you choose.

Price Differences between Crestor and Lipitor

A lot of the time, patients will base their decisions around money. The highly popular drug, Lipitor, is on the verge of becoming generic but can still cost somewhere around $160 per month in the US. However, once its patent expires, doctors believe that it will cost close to 80% less, which should influence decisions among patients.

Fortunately for Crestor, its patent doesn’t expire until 2016, and until that time it is able to charge patients about $5 per pill in the US..

Crestor vs. Lipitor? Which is the Most Effective

Dr. Stephen Nicholls, a clinical director in Cleveland, conducted a study that included more than 1,000 patients. On average, each patient is close to 57 years of age and has a disease related to their coronary artery. The participants were then randomly assigned to either 40mg of Crestor or 80mg of Lipitor. This occurred daily for two years.

By the time the study was over, both groups had experienced a significant drop in the amount of plague in their arteries. And very few side effects occurred as well. Patients experienced fewer strokes as well as heart attacks, something that helped Stephen conclude that these drugs worked much more effectively than some of the more aggressive regimens used today.

Not only are these drugs safe but they have profound effects on the body. Plague in the vessel walls virtually disappear, and high doses of the drug were generally not required to achieve this. In certain cases, it is important to note that Crestor did fare better than Lipitor one some areas.

LDL Levels – Crestor Works Slightly Better

Patients who took Crestor during the study had noticed a 72% drop in their LDL levels while patients taking Lipitor noticed a 56% drop in their LDL levels. Not to mention, the patients taking Crestor experienced an increase in levels of HDL in their bodies. Overall, while the drugs fared slightly the same, Crestor did go above and beyond at helping patients lower their cholesterol.

Bottom Line

A lot of experts are still convinced that the drugs are about the same. While this may or may not be true, the deciding factor is likely going to fall in the pricing department. More specifically, whichever drug is becomes cheaper will likely be the drug that more patients take over the long run.

What is Amlodipine?

Filed under: cholesterol,cholesterol check,high blood pressure,high cholesterol — robertprice @ 10:50 am

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that’s metabolized mainly in the liver. It can be taken by a patient at any time. It does not necessarily have to be taken with food.

Amlodipine can affect the amount of calcium in a patient’s heart and muscle cells. It’s used mainly to treat patients who have high blood pressure, but it’s also used to prevent certain types of chest pain and angina.

Blood pressure is lowered by amlodipine by relaxing the blood vessels. This way, blood can flow more easily. This lowering of blood pressure helps to reduce risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disorders.

Commonly, amlodipine is known to help relieve patients of chest or heart pains, which can happen when not enough oxygen gets to the heart muscles. This lack of oxygen may be due to spasms or coronary artery blockage.

Those with a narrow coronary artery may also feel chest or heart pain during strenuous physical activities: heavy physical activity can increase the demand for oxygen in the heart. Taking amlodipine lessens the stress in blood vessels, thereby reducing the amount of work the heart has to do.

Using Amlodipine

Amlodipine comes in tablet form and in dosages of 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg. It is usually taken once a day. Your doctor will base your dosage on your individual medical condition response to treatments.

It’s important to take this medication regularly. Otherwise, it might not be as effective.

Most patients with high blood pressure do not feel sick, which makes them forget to take the medicine. If you’ve been prescribed amlodipine, try to take the medicine at the same time each day to make it a habit.

Amlodipine is used to prevent angina, not treat it. If angina occurs, a doctor must be consulted. Different medication may be required.

Amlodipine Side Effects

Most people who take amlodipine do not suffer from any side effects. If side effects are felt, risks are usually outweighed by the benefits.

Still, remember to consult a doctor immediately if serious, though unlikely, side effects of the medicine are felt. Here are a few to remember:

  • Allergic reactions: rashes, swelling, or itching of the face, tongue or throat
  • Breathing problems
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Facial flushing
  • Severe fatigue
  • Headache
  • Hearing changes
  • Heart palpitations
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Mouth dryness
  • Sleeping problems
  • Stomach pain
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles or lower extremities
  • Vision changes
  • Vomiting or nausea

Amlodipine Contraindications

Women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should not use amlodipine. Neither should breastfeeding women use it.

If you have any of the following problems, amlodipine might not be for you:

  • Allergic reactions to medicines, dyes, foods or preservatives
  • Heart problems like aortic stenosis
  • Liver disease

Additionally, it should not be taken with the following:

  • Certain dietary supplements
  • Local or general anesthetics
  • High blood pressure medicines
  • Prostate problem medicines
  • Rifampin

Superhero Foods That Can Lower Your Cholesterol

Our bodies naturally produce enough cholesterol for our bodies to function properly. However, the commodity and convenience of fast-food restaurants have caused our cholesterol as a whole to rise, which has in turn increased the frequency of heart attacks and other vascular issues within the population. There are several medications that can easily lower your cholesterol levels; however, there are also certain foods that can help to lower your cholesterol so that you do not need to take any medication. These superhero foods are able to reduce the body’s cholesterol levels naturally, and in doing so, promote healthier living and lifestyle habits; another key component to keeping cholesterol levels down.

Superhero Foods That Will Help to Lower Cholesterol:

Foods Containing Fibers – Certain foods, including oat bran, oats, barley, beans and psyllium have in them a specific type of “sticky fiber”, which literally attaches itself to the cholesterol inside the body and helps to flush it out.

Liver Suppressing Foods – Your body’s natural source of cholesterol comes from your liver. Soy products have been proven to reduce cholesterol by suppressing the liver’s production of cholesterol.

Foods Containing Plant Sterols – Plant Sterols are natural compounds that do not allow cholesterol to be absorbed by the body. All plant oils, nuts, seed and leafy vegetables are known to contain sterols. Certain over-the-counter supplements will contain sterols as well.

Nuts – Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and pistachios make great low-cholesterol snacks, as they contain “sticky fibers”, plant sterols and additionally possess liver suppressing qualities. Nuts have also been proven to lower triglyceride, a blood fat that is linked to both high blood pressure and heart disease.

Although these foods are all excellent in lowering cholesterol levels, they won’t do much if you continue to indulge in high-cholesterol foods. By both lowering you intake of high cholesterol foods (steaks, burgers, dairy products, and egg yolks) and increasing you intake of cholesterol lowering super-foods, you can effectively lower your cholesterol and improve your overall health.
