Improve Your Health by Eating Well

healthy dietThe expression “You are what you eat”, is completely accurate – your body will utilize the food you eat, regardless of its quality. By changing your diet now, you can begin to improve your health and increase the chances that you’ll be around to play with your great grandchildren. In particular, there are four areas of nutrition that you should ensure that your diet consists of. Those are fruits and veggies, fatty fish, fiber, and protein. Here are the benefits of each:

Fruits and vegetables: They not only taste good, but they also provide high levels of antioxidants. This will help reduce the number of cell-damaging free radicals in your body. Usually, the more vividly colored fruits and vegetables will provide the highest levels of antioxidants. Moreover, fruit is a natural source of sugar. Instead of satisfying your sweet tooth with processed grocery desserts or fattening baked goods, opt for a salad consisting of all of your favorite fruits. Your body will thank you.

Fatty fish: Salmon, sardines, arctic char, tuna, and trout all contain high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils. Some of the benefits of fish oils are that they can help reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke. A popular and easy way that many people ensure that are getting enough Omega-3 is through supplements. Just ensure sure you do your research about which supplement will be the best for you.

Fiber: This is essential for regulating the digestive system and for keeping the heart healthy. Fruits and vegetables, of course, often contain hefty amounts of fiber, but you can also find fiber in whole wheat bread and pasta, and nuts.

Protein: Our bodies use protein as building blocks in our bodies. Protein is essential in all aspects of health including protecting yourself against illness, maintaining your weight, and even losing weight. Meat, seafood, and dairy products are all excellent sources of protein and help the body maintain stamina and strength.

It is easy to consume products that will enhance the quality and length of your life. With the right recipes, you do not have to sacrifice taste in order to eat healthier. Once you stop the junk food snacking cycle that is deteriorating your health, your body will feel younger and stronger.

Quick Exercise vs. Long Exercise

The daily recommended amount of exercise is typically known as thirty minutes a day. That’s half an hour out of the day dedicated to working out in a gym, running outside, swimming in a pool, or even grooving to music in a Zumba class. Many people find, that with the hustle and bustle of a busy day, thirty minutes of exercise is just too hard to accomplish.

This inspired researchers at Bellarmine University and Oregon State University to see if multiple, short sessions of physical exercise, for less than 10 minutes, lead to positive results. Well, who exercises for less than 10 minutes, multiple times a day? Researchers linked this kind of exercise to an active lifestyle; meaning that small activities like taking the stairs at work, or parking in the furthest parking spot at the grocery store, counted towards an active lifestyle.

So what did the researchers test? In people aged 15-85, they compared the effects of exercising less than ten minutes, multiple times a day (non-bout activity) to the effects of exercising more than 10 minutes a day (bout activity) in relation to cardiovascular disease risk factors (i.e. BMI, waist circumference, cholesterol, metabolic syndrome)

What researchers found was the following:

• People who participated in bout activity, had significantly lower BMI
• Bout and non-bout activity have a positive influence on health
• The health outcomes in bout and non-bout activity were similar

What does this mean for you? If you lead a busy lifestyle, and cannot find the time to exercise for more than ten consecutive minutes, don’t beat yourself up over it. Lead an active lifestyle by making small changes to your daily activities. This can include activities like choosing to take the stairs when an elevator is available or walking around the house while on the phone. Leading an active lifestyle through non-bout activity, can still benefit your health and is much better than being a couch potato.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t exercise for more than ten minutes, because you should. If you find the time for a 20, 30, or even longer work out, do it! In the end, the dphysical activity will only benefit your health and body.

11 Ways for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution

1)Plan Before The New Year – Making a New Year’s resolution on December 31 won’t be much help. Your resolution should be well thought out way before the New Year arrives. It should be a goal you have thought out and are motivated to accomplish.

2)Outline You Plan – Arranging how you will accomplish your goal and what steps you are going to take will help in the long run. Not having any idea of where to begin your goal will just make you want to put it off more. If you are looking to lose weight, plan out some healthy meals you would be interested in and create a schedule for a good time to work out. Create manageable portions to help you reach your goal.

3)Stick To One Goal – Having ten different resolutions will create problems so nothing will be accomplished. Choosing one goal that you know you will stick to and are motivated to achieve will end in success. Guaranteed failure would come from trying to do everything at once.

4)A List Of Pro’s and Con’s – Making a list that shows all the good that can come out of the accomplishment of your goal can create self motivation. Thinking on the better side will add more to the Pro’s side, giving you all the motivation you need. Keep the list nearby in case you’re thinking of eating that extra slice of pizza.

5)Start With The Small Picture – Taking small steps towards a bigger goal will make your resolution seem easier. Be realistic. Losing 20 pounds in the first week of the New Year is not that great of a start. Starting off with eating right and exercising will get you to lose those 20 pounds in no time. The difference will come with more motivation as the year goes on.

6)Get Support – Not being afraid to let people know what you are trying to achieve will be all the more help. The more people you tell the more support you have if you fall behind. Getting tips and finding help in others is nothing to be scared of.

7)Begin At A Good Time – Starting right when the New Year begins may work; but the gloomy winter weather might get you down. Choosing the right time of year can be hard but you should start when you feel you are motivated enough. Of course don’t start in September when the year is almost gone. Start off in the spring when the weather is nice and the change in season will correspond with the change you wish to see in yourself.

8)Track Your Change – Seeing is believing. And seeing your progress as the year goes on will push you further towards your goal. As you go on to see how well you have done in keeping your resolution, more motivation will come to achieve that goal or even create an even bigger goal for yourself. Create check points during the year to help show how well you are doing.

9)Treat Yourself – Show yourself that through hard work comes happiness. Rewarding yourself every now and then does not hurt. It will give you something to look forward to. Keep the rewards small because in the end, those little rewards will be nothing compared to the huge difference in yourself.

10) Stick To It – Stay with your goal any way that you can. If you are trying to lose weight , find ways to avoid fatty foods or if you are looking to stop smoking, find a distraction from it. On average, it will take someone 21 days to create a habit out of something and 6 months for that habit to turn into a lifestyle. Sticking to your goal will become who you are, making it that much easier.

11)You Are In Charge – Don’t let anyone or anything get you down. You make your progress at your own pace, not anyone else’s. Don’t put yourself down when you get off track a little. Do what you can each day to make yourself happy. Show a strong sense of control of your goal otherwise you might just lose sight of what you wanted in the first place.

Helping America Get Healthy

If you’ve ever looked at the food pyramid to get an idea of what to eat then you may have noticed how it may be difficult to really determine what to eat and how much. What about looking at the food pyramid and not knowing what you should eat that fits into these categories? Well thankfully there is a program that solves both of these problems. A program called MyPyramid can help you figure out how many calories you should be eating, how much of each food group you should be eating, and what types of meals fit into each food group.

This program will help you watch what you eat. You can even use the program to plan out a weeks worth of meals. You can definitely see if you’re overeating in any food group or even under eating (vegetables). If the majority of people knew and used this type of program on a regular basis then maybe America wouldn’t be suffering from such a large obesity problem.

With things like McDonald’s it is really easy to give in to the temptation, especially when fast food restaurants are so convenient. However, people need to take things in moderation. I’m not going to say never have McDonald’s (though it would probably help a lot), but don’t eat McDonald’s all the time. Maybe once a month, twice if you really crave it. This goes for all junk food not just fast food.

Next time you get a craving for a snack eat an apple instead of the chocolate bar. Apples still have sugars in them, but they’re healthier then a chocolate bar. Use your will power to stay away from all the crap that is very available and heavily advertised. If you have any sort of sports hero, perhaps a fighter, a hockey player, or a basketball player, then try to remember this. These guys don’t eat unhealthy foods. These are top athletes, many of them measure each meal or snack that they eat. Very rarely do you see a professional athlete eating at McDonald’s Even when they do have the occasional Big Mac (Anderson Silva) they work their butt off to burn the calories. Most of us have desk jobs or a job that requires no to minimal physical endurance or strength when compared to some athletes.

Just try and be healthier, all America needs is some will power and a little helpful motivation to become healthy again.
