Indications

Trihexyphenidyl is prescribed in conjunction with other medications for the management of symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurologic disorder characterized by impaired movement, muscle control, and balance. It is also employed to regulate extrapyramidal symptoms (such as tremors and slurred speech) induced by specific medications. Trihexyphenidyl belongs to the class of drugs known as antimuscarinics, functioning by alleviating muscular tension and modulating nerve impulses that govern muscle function.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally according to the instructions provided by your physician, typically 3 to 4 times daily during meals and at bedtime. The prescribed dosage is based on your medical condition, age, and response to therapy.

Administer this medication at least 2 hours after ketoconazole.

If you are using this medication for Parkinson’s disease, your doctor may adjust the dosage of your other medications, such as levodopa.

Side Effects

This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely.

To minimize the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly when transitioning from a seated or lying position.

This medication reduces saliva production, which can lead to dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Pay extra attention to dental hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, and maintain routine dental check-ups.

Liquid formulations of this product may contain alcohol. If you have diabetes, alcohol dependence, or liver disease, exercise caution. Certain medications may cause serious reactions when combined with alcohol.

This drug can result in decreased sweating, potentially causing a dangerous increase in body temperature (hyperthermia). The risk of this serious side effect is higher in hot weather, during strenuous exercise, and/or when consuming alcohol. Stay well-hydrated, dress lightly in hot weather, and while exercising. If you experience signs of hyperthermia, such as changes in mental state, headache, or dizziness, promptly seek cooler or air-conditioned surroundings, discontinue exercise, and seek immediate medical assistance.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly dizziness, drowsiness, heatstroke, memory problems, difficulty urinating, and constipation. Dizziness and drowsiness increase the risk of falls.

Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, particularly those affecting heart rate.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
