Description

Indications

Trihexyphenidyl is prescribed in conjunction with other medications for the management of symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurologic disorder characterized by impaired movement, muscle control, and balance. It is also employed to regulate extrapyramidal symptoms (such as tremors and slurred speech) induced by specific medications. Trihexyphenidyl belongs to the class of drugs known as antimuscarinics, functioning by alleviating muscular tension and modulating nerve impulses that govern muscle function.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally according to the instructions provided by your physician, typically 3 to 4 times daily during meals and at bedtime. Initially, your doctor may initiate treatment with a low dosage and gradually adjust it to determine the optimal dose for your specific needs. The prescribed dosage is based on your medical condition, age, and response to therapy.

If you are utilizing the liquid formulation of this medication, accurately measure your dose using a specialized measuring spoon or device. Avoid employing a regular household spoon, as it may not ensure the precise dosage.

Consistently adhere to the recommended schedule to derive maximum benefit from this medication. Establish a routine by taking it at the same time each day to aid in remembering.

Consume this medication at least 1 hour prior to using antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium. Allow a minimum of 1 to 2 hours between trihexyphenidyl doses and certain diarrhea medications (adsorbent antidiarrheals such as kaolin, pectin, attapulgite). Administer this medication at least 2 hours after ketoconazole.

If you are taking this medication to alleviate side effects caused by another medication, your doctor may instruct you to follow a regular dosing schedule or take it as needed. If you are using this medication for Parkinson’s disease, your doctor may adjust the dosage of your other medications, such as levodopa.

While this medication provides significant relief for many individuals, it may carry a potential risk of addiction. This risk may be heightened if you have a history of substance use disorder involving drugs or alcohol. Avoid increasing the dosage, taking it more frequently, or prolonging the duration of use beyond the prescribed regimen. Follow the appropriate procedure for discontinuing the medication as directed. Abruptly stopping the drug may worsen certain conditions. Gradual dose reduction may be necessary.

Extended use of this medication can lead to diminished efficacy, requiring adjustments to the dosing regimen.

If this medication ceases to be as effective over time, discuss the matter with your doctor. Notify your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Caution

Prior to initiating trihexyphenidyl treatment, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies to this medication or other substances. Inactive ingredients present in the product may trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your complete medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of glaucoma, respiratory issues, diarrhea caused by an infection, heart problems, high or low blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, mental or mood disorders, specific muscle diseases (myasthenia gravis), autonomic neuropathy (a certain nerve disease), seizures, stroke, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), difficulties with urination, or personal/family history of substance use disorder involving drugs or alcohol.

This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely.

To minimize the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly when transitioning from a seated or lying position.

This medication reduces saliva production, which can lead to dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Pay extra attention to dental hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, and maintain routine dental check-ups.

Liquid formulations of this product may contain alcohol. If you have diabetes, alcohol dependence, or liver disease, exercise caution. Certain medications may cause serious reactions when combined with alcohol.

This drug can result in decreased sweating, potentially causing a dangerous increase in body temperature (hyperthermia). The risk of this serious side effect is higher in hot weather, during strenuous exercise, and/or when consuming alcohol. Stay well-hydrated, dress lightly in hot weather, and while exercising. If you experience signs of hyperthermia, such as changes in mental state, headache, or dizziness, promptly seek cooler or air-conditioned surroundings, discontinue exercise, and seek immediate medical assistance.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly dizziness, drowsiness, heatstroke, memory problems, difficulty urinating, and constipation. Dizziness and drowsiness increase the risk of falls.

Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, particularly those affecting heart rate.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
