Description

Indications

The estradiol cypionate and estradiol valerate formulations of estrogen injection are prescribed for the management of hot flushes and/or symptoms of vaginal dryness, itching, and burning in women undergoing menopause. For women seeking treatment solely for vaginal dryness, itching, or burning, alternative therapeutic options should be considered. The estradiol valerate form of estrogen injection is occasionally employed for alleviating symptoms associated with specific forms of prostate cancer. Estrogen injection belongs to a class of pharmaceuticals known as hormones, functioning by replenishing the natural production of estrogen in the body.

Uses and Dosage

The long-acting estrogen injections, specifically estradiol cypionate and estradiol valerate, are administered in liquid form via intramuscular injection. These medications are typically administered by a healthcare professional at intervals of approximately 3 to 4 weeks. In cases where estradiol valerate is utilized for the treatment of prostate cancer symptoms, healthcare professionals generally administer the injection at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks.

On the other hand, the estrogen injection in the form of conjugated estrogens is provided as a powder, which is mixed with sterile water and then injected into a muscle or vein. This method of administration is typically carried out by a healthcare professional as a single dose. If necessary to control vaginal bleeding, a second dose may be administered 6 to 12 hours after the initial dose.

For individuals utilizing estrogen injection to alleviate hot flushes, it is expected that symptom improvement will occur within 1 to 5 days following the injection. If no improvement is observed during this timeframe, inform your doctor.

Before commencing the use of this medication, disclose your complete medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of vaginal bleeding of unknown origin, certain types of cancers, blood clotting disorders, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, a family history of breast abnormalities, cancer, or blood clots, a personal or family history of a specific swelling disorder known as angioedema, blood clotting disorders such as protein C or protein S deficiency, high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated levels of blood cholesterol or triglycerides, obesity, lupus, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), imbalances in mineral levels, a particular hormone disorder called hypoparathyroidism, uterus-related issues, gallbladder disease, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, a specific blood disorder known as porphyria, or mental/mood disorders.

These conditions heighten the likelihood of developing blood clots, particularly when using estrogen-based products.
