Description

Indications

Levothyroxine is a medication that is utilized in the treatment of hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by an underactive thyroid. This drug functions by replacing or supplementing the thyroid hormone that is typically generated by the thyroid gland. Low levels of thyroid hormone may occur naturally, as well as due to injury caused by radiation, medications, or surgical removal of the thyroid gland.

Sufficient levels of thyroid hormone are necessary for maintaining normal physical and mental activity in individuals, and in children, it is critical for healthy physical and cognitive development. In addition to its use in hypothyroidism, this medication is also employed in the treatment of other thyroid disorders, such as thyroid cancer.

Uses and Dosage

Administration of this medication should be in accordance with your doctor’s instructions. It is usually taken orally once a day, on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. Unless otherwise directed by your physician, take the medication with a full glass of water.

If the capsule form of this medication is being taken, it should be swallowed whole, without splitting, crushing, or chewing.

For individuals who are unable to swallow the capsule, the tablet form of the medication should be used. In such cases, crush the tablet and mix it in 1 to 2 teaspoons (5 to 10 milliliters) of water. Administer the mixture immediately using a dropper or spoon. Do not prepare a supply in advance.

The dosage of this medication depends on various factors including age, weight, medical condition, laboratory test results, response to treatment, and other medications being taken. Be sure to inform your doctor and pharmacist of all products you use, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal products.

In order to achieve optimal results, use this medication regularly. To help you remember, take it at the same time every day. Do not discontinue this medication without consulting your doctor first. Thyroid replacement therapy is usually required for the entirety of one’s life.

Different brands of levothyroxine are available. Do not switch brands without first consulting your doctor or pharmacist.

Several medications, including cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam, antacids, sucralfate, simethicone, iron, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, calcium supplements, orlistat, lanthanum, sevelamer, among others, may decrease the amount of thyroid hormone absorbed by your body. If you are taking any of these drugs, take them at least 4 hours apart from levothyroxine.

Symptoms of low thyroid hormone levels include muscle aches, tiredness, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heartbeat, or sensitivity to cold. If your condition worsens or persists after several weeks of taking this medication, inform your doctor.
