Description

Drug Description:

Asacol (mesalamine) is used to treat moderately active ulcerative colitis among adults. It helps minimize the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.

This aminosalicylate tablet works by blocking cyclooxygenase and inhibiting prostaglandin production in the large intestine, particularly the colon. Thus, this drug could reduce the swelling of the affected area.

Directions

Read the medication or prescription guide provided to you. Follow the instructions that were given by your physician or healthcare provider. It is available in a delayed-release Asacol HD 800 mg tablet.

This medication is usually taken thrice a day, with or without food. Swallow it whole and do not cut, crush, or chew this tablet to ensure that it will be released in the colon.

Drink a lot of water/fluids when taking this medicine, unless contraindicated in your condition, to prevent kidney stones from forming.

Remember to use this medication regularly and at the same time of the day, every day, to avoid missing your dose. In case of a missed Asacol HD dose, take it immediately. If it is almost time for your next dose, disregard the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take two tablets of Asacol simultaneously.

Side Effects

The common side effects you may experience with Asacol HD are:
-nausea
-vomiting
-headache
-stomach pain
-indigestion
-diarrhea
-flatulence

These common side effects usually disappear on their own. However, some of the severe adverse reactions you should watch out for are severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, coughing out blood, easy bruising, painful urination, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and fever. If you experience any severe symptoms, call your physician or healthcare provider immediately.

Precautions

Avoid taking this medication if you have a known allergy to aminosalicylates, any salicylates, sulfasalazine, or any ingredients this drug may have. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are red patches or skin rash, hives, swelling of the face, and difficulty breathing.

Talk to your physician about your full medical history or any medical condition you may have, such as kidney disease, liver disease, pyloric stenosis, or any stomach blockage.

If you are sensitive to the sun, more so, if you have skin problems like eczema or atopic dermatitis, you have to limit your sun exposure. Remember to use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outdoors. Avoid indoor tanning like tanning booths and sunlamps.

There are insufficient clinical trials to determine whether Asacol HD could harm an unborn child. Thus, pregnant women should only use this medication if the potential benefits are greater than the potential risks. As for breastfeeding, Asacol HD could pass into the breastmilk and may negatively affect a breastfed baby.
