Description

Indications

Lubiprostone is indicated for the treatment of specific types of constipation, including chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. This medication is also used for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation in individuals with chronic pain caused by medical conditions other than cancer. The drug may alleviate symptoms such as bloating and abdominal discomfort, improve stool consistency, reduce the need for straining during bowel movements, and lessen the sensation of incomplete evacuation.

Lubiprostone belongs to a class of pharmacological agents called chloride channel activators. The mechanism of action involves increasing the fluid content within the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating the passage of stool.

Uses and Dosage

Lubiprostone is administered orally in the form of a capsule. Typically, it is taken twice a day, in the morning and evening, along with food and water. Maintain consistency in the timing of administration.

The medication should be taken precisely as directed, without increasing or decreasing the dose, or altering the frequency of administration.

The capsule should be swallowed whole, without being opened, chewed, or crushed. If you experience difficulty in swallowing, inform your physician.

Lubiprostone may help alleviate symptoms, but it is not intended to cure the underlying condition. Continue taking the medication, even if there is an improvement in symptoms. Discontinuing the medication should be done only after consulting with the doctor, who will monitor the condition and advise when it is appropriate to stop using lubiprostone.

Caution

Prior to initiating treatment with lubiprostone, inform your physician or pharmacist if you have any known allergies, including allergies to lubiprostone or any other medication. The formulation may contain inactive constituents, which have the potential to cause allergic reactions or other related issues.

Provide your medical history, specifically any gastrointestinal conditions like blockage or severe diarrhea, or any underlying liver disease before using this medication.

During pregnancy, the use of this medication should only be considered if deemed necessary by your physician, weighing the potential benefits against the risks.

Although it is unclear whether lubiprostone passes into breast milk, it may have adverse effects such as diarrhea on a nursing infant. Consult with your doctor prior to breastfeeding.
