Indications
Oxaprozin is indicated for the alleviation of pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is additionally employed to relieve similar symptoms in children aged 6 years and older with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Oxaprozin belongs to a category of pharmaceuticals known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which function by inhibiting the body’s synthesis of a pain, fever, and inflammation-inducing substance.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking this medication orally, usually once a day. Consume a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) with the medication, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. To avoid any discomfort, do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking the drug. In the event of stomach upset, take the medication with food, milk, or an antacid.
The dosage of this medication is determined by your medical condition, body weight, and response to treatment. The manufacturer recommends that adults should not exceed a daily dose of 1,800 milligrams or 26 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, whichever is lower. To minimize the risk of side effects, such as stomach bleeding, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible.
Do not increase your dosage or take the drug more frequently than directed. For chronic conditions like arthritis, continue taking the medication as prescribed by your doctor. It is recommended to discuss the risks and benefits of the medication with your doctor or pharmacist.
In certain conditions, such as arthritis, it may take up to 2 weeks of regular use before you experience the full benefits of this drug.

- fast heartbeat
- cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine
- back pain
- difficult or painful urination
Caution
Prior to initiating oxaprozin treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to oxaprozin, aspirin, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or celecoxib, as well as any other allergies you may have. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can elicit allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have asthma, liver disease, gastrointestinal issues, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, blood disorders, or nasal polyps.
The use of NSAID medications, including oxaprozin, can lead to kidney problems. The risk of such complications is heightened if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or if you are taking specific medications. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding fluid intake to prevent dehydration, and promptly notify your doctor if there is a change in your urine output.
This medication may induce dizziness or drowsiness. Consuming alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can safely do so.
This medicine has the potential to cause stomach bleeding. Regular use of alcohol and tobacco, particularly when combined with this medication, may elevate the risk of stomach bleeding. Limit alcohol consumption and cease smoking.
Increased sensitivity to sunlight may occur with this medication. Minimize sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and employ sun protection measures such as sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Promptly inform your doctor if you experience sunburn or develop skin blisters or redness.
Older adults may face an elevated risk of stomach/intestinal bleeding, kidney problems, heart attack, and stroke while using this medication.
Women of childbearing age should discuss the benefits and risks of using this medication with their doctor(s) before initiating treatment. Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication may harm an unborn baby and cause complications during labor and delivery. Its use is not recommended from the 20th week of pregnancy until delivery. If your doctor determines that usage is necessary between the 20th and 30th weeks of pregnancy, the lowest effective dose should be employed for the shortest duration possible. This medication should not be used after the 30th week of pregnancy.
It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
