Description

Indications

Perindopril is prescribed either on its own or in conjunction with other medications to manage high blood pressure. It belongs to a category of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Its mechanism of action involves promoting smoother blood flow by inhibiting the generation of specific natural chemicals responsible for constricting blood vessels.

Uses and Dosage

Perindopril is available in tablet form for oral administration. Typically, it is taken once or twice daily. To establish a routine, aim to take perindopril at approximately the same time each day.

Follow your doctor’s precise directions, neither increasing nor decreasing the dosage or frequency of perindopril on your own. Initially, your doctor may start you on a low perindopril dose and make gradual adjustments as necessary.

Perindopril effectively manages high blood pressure but does not offer a cure. Even if you feel well, continue taking perindopril as prescribed by your healthcare provider, and do not discontinue its use without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • cough
  • headache
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • upset stomach

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • lightheadedness
  • fainting
  • fever, sore throat, chills, and other signs of infection
  • irregular or rapid heartbeats

Caution

Before initiating perindopril, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any known allergies to it, other ACE inhibitors, or any other substances. This product might contain inactive components capable of triggering allergic reactions or other complications.

Prior to commencing this medication, discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of allergic reactions involving facial or throat swelling (angioedema), have undergone blood filtration procedures (e.g., LDL apheresis or dialysis), exhibit elevated blood potassium levels, or have liver disease.

Perindopril may induce dizziness. Alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate this dizziness. Until you can perform tasks safely, avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness.

Prolonged diarrhea, excessive sweating, or vomiting can lead to dehydration and an increased risk of lightheadedness. If you experience persistent diarrhea or vomiting, contact your doctor. Consume adequate fluids to prevent dehydration, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

This medication may elevate your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Older adults may be more susceptible to certain side effects of this drug, particularly dizziness, elevated potassium levels, and skin rashes.

Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking perindopril. It is advised not to become pregnant during perindopril use, as it may pose risks to the unborn child. In the event of pregnancy, promptly discuss the medication’s risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown whether perindopril passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
