Employing cyclosporine for indications beyond allergic/atopic dermatitis in dogs or cats represents an off-label use. It is not uncommon for veterinary medicine to prescribe medications off-label. In such instances, adhere closely to the directions and precautions outlined by your veterinarian.
Uses and Dosage
Administration of cyclosporine entails oral ingestion, typically through the use of capsules for dogs and liquid suspension for cats.
Handle the capsules with care, refraining from opening or breaking them. When administering the medication, it is advised not to rinse the oral syringe between doses. Precise measurement of the liquid forms is crucial. Strictly adhere to the prescribed instructions provided by your veterinarian.
For cats, it is generally recommended to administer cyclosporine alongside food.
Dogs should receive the capsules on an empty stomach. Wait for a period of one to two hours before feeding your dog after administering the medication. In the event that your dog experiences vomiting after receiving the medication on an empty stomach, providing the medication alongside a small amount of food or freezing the capsules before administration may be helpful.
Exercise caution to prevent accidental exposure, especially in humans, particularly pregnant women, as it can have adverse effects. When handling the medication, wear gloves to minimize the risk of contact. If your pet vomits subsequent to receiving the drug, wear gloves during the cleanup process.
The duration for cyclosporine to take full effect varies depending on the condition being treated and may require up to six weeks. Gradual improvements are typically observed throughout the course of treatment.
Side Effects
Atopica may cause some side effects. Most common side effects include:
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- swimmer’s ear
- urinary tract infection
- anorexia
- lethargy
- gingival hyperplasia (overgrowth of gums)
- lymphadenopathy (swelling of lymph nodes)
Caution
Cyclosporine is contraindicated for use in dogs with a history of neoplasia due to its potent immunosuppressant properties, which can increase the susceptibility to infections and the development of neoplasia.
The initial recommended dose of cyclosporine may lead to gastrointestinal problems and gingival hyperplasia.
Cyclosporine should not be administered to dogs younger than 6 months of age or weighing less than 4 lbs. It should not be used in breeding dogs, pregnant dogs, or lactating female dogs.
The impact of cyclosporine use on dogs with compromised renal functions has not been thoroughly studied. Caution should be exercised when using cyclosporine in dogs with renal insufficiency.
Cyclosporine is strictly intended for use in dogs and should not be used by humans. To ensure the safety of children, this medication, along with all other drugs, should be kept out of their reach.
For cats, the safety and effectiveness of cyclosporine has not been established in cats younger than 6 months of age or weighing less than 3 lbs (1.4 kg) body weight.
Before initiating treatment, cats should be tested and confirmed negative for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infections.
Similar to any immunosuppressive regimen, the use of cyclosporine for cats may exacerbate underlying sub-clinical neoplastic and infectious conditions. Cyclosporine should not be used concomitantly with other immunosuppressive agents.
Cyclosporine for cats may lead to elevated levels of serum glucose, creatinine, and urea nitrogen. Caution should be exercised when administering cyclosporine to cats with diabetes mellitus or renal insufficiency.
