Description

Indications

Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic medication that is prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, skin infections, and abdominal infections. It is also utilized to prevent and treat plague, a severe infection that may be intentionally spread as part of a bioterror attack. This medication may be recommended for the treatment of bronchitis or sinus infections, but only if there are no other treatment options available.

Moxifloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones, which operate by eliminating the bacteria that cause infections. Antibiotics, including moxifloxacin, are ineffective against viral infections such as colds or the flu. Misuse of antibiotics may raise the likelihood of contracting antibiotic-resistant infections in the future, only use antibiotics when they are medically necessary.

Uses and Dosage

To ensure proper usage, take this medication orally with or without food, usually once daily. The dose and duration of treatment will be determined by your medical condition and response to therapy.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

To avoid reducing the effectiveness of this drug, take it at least four hours before or eight hours after consuming other products that may bind to it. Your pharmacist can provide more information about products that may interact with this medication, such as quinapril, sucralfate, vitamins/minerals, and products containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium.

For optimal efficacy, take this antibiotic at consistent intervals. To assist with adherence, take the medication at the same time(s) each day.

Continue taking this medication until the full prescribed amount has been consumed, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Discontinuing the medication prematurely may result in a recurrence of the infection.

If your condition persists or worsens, inform your doctor immediately.

Caution

Prior to taking moxifloxacin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have an allergy to this medication, other quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin, or any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that could lead to allergic reactions or other issues.

Before taking this medication, discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have diabetes, heart problems, joint or tendon problems, liver disease, mental or mood disorders, myasthenia gravis, nerve problems, seizure disorders, conditions that increase your risk of seizures, blood vessel problems, high blood pressure, or certain genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Moxifloxacin has the potential to cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). QT prolongation can rarely cause serious, and even fatal, fast or irregular heartbeat and other symptoms such as severe dizziness or fainting, which require immediate medical attention.

In some cases, this medication may cause serious changes in blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed by your doctor and share the results with them. Look out for symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination, or symptoms of low blood sugar such as sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands or feet. To prevent low blood sugar, eat meals regularly and do not skip meals. If any reaction occurs, your doctor may need to switch you to another antibiotic or adjust your diabetes medications.
