Betoptic Eyedrops (Betaxolol)

Description

Indications

Ophthalmic betaxolol is prescribed to address glaucoma, a condition characterized by elevated pressure within the eye, potentially causing a gradual decline in vision. Classified as a beta-blocker, betaxolol operates by reducing the intraocular pressure, thereby mitigating the risk of vision loss.

Uses and Dosage

Ophthalmic betaxolol is available in both liquid solution and suspension forms for instillation into the eyes. Typically, it is applied twice a day.

Follow the prescribed usage of betaxolol precisely; avoid using more or less than instructed or increasing the frequency beyond your doctor’s recommendation.

While betaxolol eye drops effectively manage glaucoma, they do not serve as a cure. Continue using betaxolol eye drops even if you are feeling well. Never discontinue the use of betaxolol eye drops without consulting your doctor.

To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:

1. Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
2. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
3. Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
4. Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
5. Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
6. Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
7. Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
8. Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
9. Wash hands to remove any residual medication.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

• eye irritation
• eye tearing
• headache
• dizziness
• insomnia

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

• difficulty breathing
• change in vision
• eye pain

Caution

• Before initiating betaxolol, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you may have, including allergies to other beta blockers such as timolol and metipranolol. Additionally, disclose any other allergies, as the product may contain inactive ingredients, such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride, which could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
• Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have diabetes, experience low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), suffer from an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), have muscle weakness disorders like myasthenia gravis, encounter breathing problems such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), have heart issues like heart failure, slow heartbeat, or second- or third-degree atrioventricular block, experience low blood flow to the brain (cerebrovascular insufficiency), have poor blood flow to the hands/feet (Raynaud’s phenomenon), or have severe allergies.
• If you develop an eye infection or injury, or undergo eye surgery, consult your doctor about whether to continue using your current bottle of betaxolol. Your doctor may advise you to switch to a new bottle.
• This medication may cause dizziness or temporary blurred vision. Avoid activities that require alertness or clear vision, such as driving or operating machinery, until you can do so safely. Limit alcohol consumption, and discuss marijuana use with your doctor.
• Betaxolol may prevent the usual fast/pounding heartbeat associated with low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), especially if you have diabetes or are experiencing vomiting, fasting, or irregular eating. Other symptoms of low blood sugar, like dizziness and sweating, are not affected by this drug.
• For individuals with diabetes, this product may make it more challenging to control blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor. Report any symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination, to your doctor, who may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet.
• During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary, discussing the risks and benefits with your doctor.
• It’s uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Cconsult your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQ

What is the difference between Betoptic and Betoptic S?

Betoptic Eye Drops contains betaxolol 5 mg in 1 mL. Betoptic S Eye Drops contains betaxolol 2.5 mg in 1 mL.

Why are you supposed to wait 5 minutes between eye drops?

This delay supposedly allows the first drop not to be washed out by the second one, thereby increasing the combined effect.
