Indications
Acamprosate is prescribed in conjunction with counseling and social support to assist individuals who have abstained from excessive alcohol consumption (alcoholism) in maintaining their sobriety. Prolonged alcohol consumption adversely affects brain function, and acamprosate functions by restoring normal brain activity in individuals who have consumed substantial quantities of alcohol. Acamprosate does not alleviate withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol cessation.
Uses and Dosage
Acamprosate is administered orally in the form of delayed-release tablets, which release the medication in the intestine. It is typically taken three times a day, with or without food.
Maintaining a consistent schedule by taking acamprosate at approximately the same times each day can help in remembering all three doses. Adhere to the prescribed dosage regimen without making adjustments or taking it more frequently than directed.
The tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be split, chewed, or crushed.
Acamprosate effectively assists in preventing alcohol consumption only while the medication is being taken. Continue taking acamprosate even if there is no immediate intention to resume drinking alcohol. Discontinuing acamprosate should only be done under the guidance of a doctor.
In the event that alcohol is consumed while taking acamprosate, continue the medication and promptly contact a healthcare professional.
Acamprosate does not induce an adverse reaction if alcohol is consumed during treatment.
