Indications
Colestipol is prescribed in conjunction with dietary modifications to reduce the levels of lipid compounds, specifically low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad cholesterol,” in individuals with elevated cholesterol levels.
Colestipol belongs to a group of medications known as bile acid sequestrants. Its mechanism of action involves the binding of bile acids in the intestines, resulting in the formation of a complex that is subsequently eliminated from the body.
Uses and Dosage
Colestipol is available in tablet and granule form for oral administration. The tablets are typically taken once or twice daily, while the granules are taken one to six times daily. Take colestipol exactly as directed, without exceeding or reducing the prescribed dosage frequency.
Unless otherwise advised, take all other medications at least one hour before or four hours after taking colestipol, as it may interfere with their absorption.
Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water or another suitable liquid, avoiding chewing, splitting, or crushing them.
Your doctor may adjust your dosage gradually at intervals of one to two months, depending on your individual response to the medication.
Continue taking colestipol even if you feel well. Do not discontinue its use without consulting your doctor.
The granules should not be taken dry. Mix them with at least 3 ounces (90 milliliters) of a liquid such as fruit juice, water, milk, or a soft drink. Stir the mixture until fully dissolved. If a carbonated beverage is used, mix it slowly in a large glass to minimize foaming. After taking the dose, rinse the glass with a small amount of additional liquid and consume it to ensure you receive the entire dose.
Colestipol can also be mixed with hot or regular breakfast cereals, thin soups like tomato or chicken noodle, or pulpy fruits such as crushed pineapple, pears, peaches, and fruit cocktail.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- belching
- bloating
- constipation
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- fatigue
- gas
- headache
- heartburn
- loss of appetite
- nausea
- rash
- spinning sensation
- stomach pain
- trouble sleeping
- vomiting
- weakness
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- bleeding or worsening hemorrhoids
- chest pain
- increased heart rate
- increased liver enzymes
- joint, muscle, or back pain
- loss of weight (sudden)
- rapid heartbeat
- shortness of breath
- black, tarry stools
- stomach pain (severe) with nausea and vomiting
Caution
Prior to initiating colestipol therapy, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies you may have, including allergies to colestipol or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, please inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have experienced any swallowing difficulties, constipation, hemorrhoids, or kidney disease.
Due to the potential interference of this medication with the absorption of specific nutrients such as folic acid and fat-soluble vitamins (including vitamins A, D, E, and K), your doctor may recommend the use of a multivitamin supplement. It is advisable to consult your doctor for more detailed information.
Elderly individuals may exhibit increased sensitivity to the side effects of this medication, particularly constipation.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if clearly necessary. It may impact the absorption of certain nutrients. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
Although it is unlikely that this medication will pass into breast milk, it may affect the absorption of specific nutrients. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor for guidance.
