Description

Indications

Glyburide is utilized in conjunction with a suitable dietary plan and exercise regimen to effectively manage elevated blood sugar levels in individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed alongside other medications intended for diabetes management.

By regulating high blood sugar levels, this medication aids in the prevention of various complications such as kidney damage, visual impairment, neuropathy, amputation, and sexual dysfunction. As a member of the sulfonylurea drug class, glyburide operates by stimulating the release of endogenous insulin within the body, thus promoting the lowering of blood sugar levels.

Uses and Dosage

Glyburide is available in various tablet formulations, each containing different quantities of the medication. Do not switch between different forms or brands of this medication unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

Follow your doctor’s guidance and take this medication orally with breakfast or the first major meal of the day, typically once daily. In certain cases, particularly with higher dosages, patients may be advised to take the medication twice daily. The appropriate dosage will be determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

To minimize the risk of adverse effects, your doctor may instruct you to initiate treatment with a low dose and gradually increase it.

If you are currently taking another diabetes medication, such as chlorpropamide, carefully follow your doctor’s directions for discontinuing the previous drug and initiating glyburide.

If you are also using colesevelam, ensure that you take glyburide at least four hours prior to taking colesevelam.

Consistently use this medication as prescribed to derive maximum benefits. To aid in remembering, take it at the same time(s) every day.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens (e.g., if your blood sugar remains excessively high or low).

Caution

Prior to initiating glyburide treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, including allergies to glyburide or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, specific hormonal conditions, electrolyte imbalances, or a particular nervous system disorder (autonomic neuropathy).

Extreme low or high blood sugar levels can result in symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness or clear vision until you are certain that you can perform them safely.

While taking this medication, limit alcohol consumption as it may heighten the risk of developing low blood sugar. In rare cases, alcohol can interact with glyburide and cause a serious reaction known as disulfiram-like reaction, characterized by symptoms such as facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or stomach pain.

When your body is subjected to stress due to factors such as fever, infection, injury, or surgery, it may become more challenging to regulate your blood sugar levels. Consult your doctor in such situations, as adjustments to your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar testing may be necessary.

This medication may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Minimize sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn or develop skin blisters or redness.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly low blood sugar.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if absolutely necessary. Pregnancy can contribute to the development or exacerbation of diabetes. Discuss a comprehensive plan with your doctor for managing your blood sugar levels while pregnant. In certain cases, your doctor may substitute insulin for glyburide during pregnancy. If glyburide is used, it may be switched to insulin at least two weeks before the anticipated delivery date due to the risk of low blood sugar in newborns. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Similar drugs are known to pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

If you take glyburide and skip your meal, then your blood sugar level can drop too low. If this happens, you might experience symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, and shakiness.

Can I take Diabeta if I have Type 1 diabetes?

No. Glyburide is only FDA-approved for people with Type 2 diabetes. This medication works by telling your body to make more insulin, type 1 diabetics can’t produce insulin well.
