Indications

Pentosan polysulfate is used to alleviate the discomfort and pain associated with interstitial cystitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and scarring of the bladder wall. This medication shares similarities with low molecular weight heparins and functions by preventing irritation of the bladder walls.

Uses and Dosage

Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication orally at least an hour before or two hours after meals, typically three times a day.

Consistently using this medication will maximize its effectiveness. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.

Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or consume this medication more frequently or for longer than directed. Doing so will not hasten your recovery and could increase the likelihood of adverse reactions.

If your condition worsens or fails to improve after three months, inform your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

Prior to taking pentosan polysulfate sodium, inform your physician or pharmacist about any known allergies to this medication, heparin, low molecular weight heparin, or any other allergies you may have. This product may include inactive components that can elicit allergic reactions or other complications.

Before administering this medication, explain your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have bleeding disorders such as thrombocytopenia or hemophilia, blood vessel conditions such as aneurysm, eye disorders, liver or spleen disease, or stomach/intestinal problems like diverticula, polyps, or stomach ulcers.

During pregnancy, use this medication only if it is necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown whether this drug transfers to breast milk. Consult your physician before breastfeeding.

How long does it take for Elmiron to work?

Some patients report symptom relief in three to four weeks. For others, it may take up to six months to see improvement. Patients are urged to continue therapy for at least six months before discontinuing treatment.

Should Elmiron be taken with or without food?

Take Elmiron 3 times per day with water on an empty stomach. To make sure your stomach is empty, take the medication 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
