Description

Indications

Ranolazine is prescribed for the treatment of chronic angina, a type of ongoing chest pain. Its primary function is to reduce the frequency of chest pain occurrences and improve exercise tolerance. Unlike other angina medications, ranolazine works through a unique mechanism and can be safely used in conjunction with other drugs such as nitrates, calcium channel blockers, and beta blockers. This drug is believed to enhance the heart’s ability to utilize oxygen, enabling it to perform more work with less oxygen consumption.

Uses and Dosage

Ranolazine is administered orally in the form of an extended-release tablet. The drug is typically taken twice a day with or without food, and you must maintain consistent dosing times. Ranolazine should be taken exactly as directed, without exceeding or reducing the prescribed dose or frequency.

The tablets must be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed or broken.

Patients will usually begin treatment with a low dose of ranolazine, which will be gradually increased by the physician.

Ranolazine is not intended to treat sudden attacks of angina. Patients should follow their physician’s directives in managing an angina attack.

While ranolazine can assist in controlling chronic angina, it cannot cure it. Continue taking the medication even if symptoms subside. Patients must not discontinue ranolazine without first consulting their physician.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • nausea
  • constipation
  • headache
  • dizziness

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat
  • difficulty breathing
  • fainting

Caution

Before initiating Ranolazine treatment, inform your physician or pharmacist if you have any known allergies or hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. The medication may contain inactive ingredients that can elicit allergic reactions or other complications.

Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly any history of liver or kidney problems, such as cirrhosis.

Ranolazine may induce QT prolongation, a condition that affects the heart rhythm. In rare instances, this can cause a fast or irregular heartbeat and other symptoms such as severe dizziness or fainting, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Your risk of QT prolongation may be elevated if you have low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood or if you are taking specific medications such as diuretics or “water pills.” Conditions like severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can also increase the risk of QT prolongation.

This medication may cause dizziness. Combining it with alcohol or marijuana can increase the dizziness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or performing activities requiring alertness until you are confident you can do so safely.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, particularly QT prolongation.

Ranolazine should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult your physician to weigh these factors.

It is unclear whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
