Description

Indications

Quetiapine is prescribed to manage specific mental and emotional conditions, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and sudden episodes of mania or depression related to bipolar disorder. It is additionally used in combination with other medications to address depression. Quetiapine is categorized as an atypical antipsychotic drug and operates by aiding in the restoration of a proper balance of certain natural substances, known as neurotransmitters, in the brain.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally as instructed by your doctor, typically once daily in the evening. You can take it with or without a light meal. Ensure that you swallow the tablets whole; do not crush or chew them, as this can cause the entire dose to be released at once, increasing the risk of side effects.

The dosage depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, and any other medications you may be using. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you are using, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.

To minimize the risk of side effects, your doctor may advise starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Take this medication regularly to maximize its benefits. To help you remember, take it at the same time every day.

Do not raise your dose or use this medication more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed. Doing so will not accelerate your recovery and may heighten the risk of side effects.

Continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Do not discontinue it without consulting your doctor. Abruptly stopping this medication may exacerbate certain conditions. You might also experience symptoms such as insomnia, nausea, headaches, diarrhea, or irritability. To minimize side effects, your doctor may need to gradually reduce your dose. Report any new or worsening symptoms promptly.

Caution

Before initiating quetiapine, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any allergies, particularly to this drug or other substances within it. This product may include inactive components capable of causing allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of eye cataracts, liver disease, a low white blood cell count, seizure disorders, difficulty swallowing, thyroid issues, stomach or intestinal blockages, inactive stomach or intestines, personal or family history of diabetes, personal or family history of substance use disorders, heart disease, high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides, sleep apnea-related breathing difficulties during sleep, or trouble urinating.

This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in tasks requiring alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely.

Quetiapine may induce a heart rhythm condition known as QT prolongation. In rare instances, QT prolongation can lead to serious (and rarely fatal) rapid or irregular heartbeats, along with symptoms like severe dizziness or fainting, necessitating immediate medical attention. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood can also increase the risk of QT prolongation. This risk may further escalate if you use specific drugs (such as diuretics or “water pills”) or have conditions such as intense sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Consult your doctor regarding the safe usage of quetiapine in such circumstances.

This medication may lead to reduced sweating, potentially elevating the risk of heat stroke. Avoid activities that might lead to overheating, like strenuous labor or exercise in hot weather, or the use of hot tubs. On hot days, stay well-hydrated and dress in lightweight clothing. If you become overheated, promptly seek a cool place to rest. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience an unrelenting fever, alterations in mental or emotional state, headaches, or dizziness.

Children may be at higher risk for specific side effects associated with this medication, such as increased blood pressure or elevated prolactin levels.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, especially drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and QT prolongation. These effects can heighten the risk of falling.

During pregnancy, only use this medication if absolutely necessary. Infants born to mothers who have used this drug during the final three months of pregnancy may occasionally exhibit symptoms like muscle stiffness or tremors, drowsiness, feeding or breathing difficulties, or persistent crying. Report any such symptoms in your newborn, especially within their first month, to your doctor immediately.

Since untreated mental or mood disorders can be severe, refrain from discontinuing this medication unless explicitly instructed by your doctor. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or suspect pregnancy, promptly discuss the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy with your doctor.

This medication infiltrates breast milk and may have adverse effects on a nursing infant. Contact your doctor immediately if your baby exhibits symptoms such as muscle stiffness or tremors, unusual drowsiness, or difficulty feeding. Consult your doctor prior to breastfeeding.
