Description

Indications

Meclizine, an antihistamine, is indicated for the prevention and management of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness that arise from motion sickness. This medication may also be employed to mitigate vertigo and disequilibrium stemming from inner ear disorders. Optimal therapeutic outcomes are achieved with pre-emptive administration, prior to the onset of symptoms.

Uses and Dosage

Meclizine is available in three different formulations: regular tablets, chewable tablets, and capsules.

Chewable tablets may be either chewed or swallowed whole, as per individual preference.

To alleviate symptoms of motion sickness, meclizine should be ingested approximately an hour before embarking on the journey. If required, doses can be repeated every 24 hours.

In case of dizziness resulting from an ear disorder, adhere to the healthcare provider’s instructions.

Follow the directions provided on the prescription label, seeking clarification from the doctor or pharmacist for any ambiguity. Meclizine must be taken exactly as prescribed, without altering the dosage or frequency, either by increasing or decreasing it.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • sleepiness
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • vomiting

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • blurry vision

Caution

Prior to taking meclizine, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, including allergies to meclizine or any of its inactive constituents. Inactive constituents can trigger allergic reactions or other adverse effects.

Before commencing the use of this medication, give your healthcare provider or pharmacist your medical history, particularly regarding respiratory problems, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, stomach or intestinal issues, hyperthyroidism, difficulty urinating, liver impairment, or kidney malfunction.

This medication can cause drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate this effect. Refrain from operating machinery, driving, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can safely perform them.

Children may be more prone to the adverse effects of this medication. It can elicit excitement instead of drowsiness in young children.

Older adults may be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of this medication, primarily drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty urinating. Drowsiness and confusion can increase the risk of falling.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed, after deliberation with a healthcare provider.

It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consulting with your healthcare provider before breastfeeding is recommended.
