Indications
Misoprostol is indicated for protection against stomach ulcers in patients who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, particularly those who are at risk of developing ulcers or have a history of ulcers. Misoprostol effectively reduces the risk of severe ulcer complications such as bleeding by reducing the exposure of the stomach lining to acid. This medication is also utilized in conjunction with mifepristone for the purpose of terminating a pregnancy.
Uses and Dosage
The dosage of this medication will be determined by your medical condition and your body’s response to treatment.
If you are taking this medication to prevent stomach ulcers, take it orally as directed by your doctor, typically four times per day. It’s best to take it after meals and before bedtime to reduce the risk of diarrhea.
If you are taking this medication to terminate a pregnancy, take it orally in exact accordance with your doctor’s instructions.
If you are using this medication to initiate labor, your healthcare professional will insert it into your vagina.
While taking misoprostol, avoid antacids that contain magnesium, as they can exacerbate diarrhea. If you require an antacid, seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist in selecting an appropriate product.
To prevent ulcers, continue taking this medication for as long as you are also taking NSAIDs. Use it consistently at the same times each day to obtain the maximum benefit.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- diarrhea
- headache
- stomach pain
- upset stomach
- gas
- vomiting
- constipation
- indigestion
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- vomiting blood
- bloody or black, tarry stools
Caution
Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you may have before taking misoprostol, as this medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction or other issues.
Prior to using this medication, provide your doctor or pharmacist with your medical history, particularly any history of stomach or intestinal disease, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Daily consumption of alcohol and tobacco can heighten the risk of stomach bleeding. Restrict alcohol intake and cease smoking.
If you are taking this medication in conjunction with mifepristone to terminate a pregnancy, there is a low possibility that the pregnancy may not conclude. Your doctor should provide clear instructions on who to contact and what steps to take in the event of an emergency. You should anticipate vaginal bleeding following administration of the combined medications. Notify your doctor if you experience unexpected symptoms, such as severe or prolonged vaginal bleeding, indications of infection (including fever, chills), or fainting.
This drug must not be used during pregnancy to prevent stomach ulcers due to the potential harm it can cause to an unborn child. If you are of childbearing age, use effective birth control methods while taking misoprostol and for at least one month or one completed menstrual cycle following cessation of the medication. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or believe you may be pregnant.
Although this medication can pass into breast milk, it is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing baby. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding.
