Description

Indications

Empagliflozin is an oral medication used to control blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It functions by aiding the kidneys in eliminating glucose from the bloodstream.

Empagliflozin is used in conjunction with a balanced diet and regular exercise to enhance blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. In addition to blood sugar control, empagliflozin also reduces the risk of death from heart attack, stroke, or heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Note that empagliflozin is not intended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Uses and Dosage

Empagliflozin comes in tablet form and is taken orally. It is typically taken once daily in the morning, with or without food, and at a consistent time each day. To ensure proper usage, follow the instructions on your prescription label closely and to seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist if any part is unclear. Take empagliflozin exactly as prescribed by your doctor and not to alter the dose or frequency without medical consultation.

Your doctor may start you on a low dose of empagliflozin and gradually increase it as needed.

Please note that empagliflozin is used to manage your condition, but it does not cure it. Continue taking empagliflozin as prescribed even if you feel well, and to avoid stopping the medication without speaking with your doctor first.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • body aches or pain
  • cough
  • loss of voice
  • muscle pain or stiffness
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • sneezing

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • bladder pain
  • bloody or cloudy urine
  • change in the color, amount, or odor of vaginal discharge
  • difficult, burning, or painful urination
  • frequent urge to urinate
  • itching, stinging, or redness of the vaginal area
  • lower back or side pain
  • pain during sexual intercourse

Caution

Before taking empagliflozin, inform your physician or pharmacist of any allergies you may have, including those to inactive ingredients. This medication may contain components that can trigger allergic reactions or other issues.

When using empagliflozin, inform your physician or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly any history of: kidney issues (including dialysis), liver problems, dehydration, alcohol use or abuse, low blood pressure, high cholesterol, and previous yeast infections in the vagina or penis.

For individuals with diabetes, changes in blood sugar levels may result in blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. To ensure your safety, avoid engaging in activities that require alertness or clear vision until you are confident in your ability to do so. Limit alcohol consumption while taking empagliflozin, as it can increase the likelihood of developing low blood sugar and high ketone levels.

In stressful conditions such as fever, infection, injury, or surgery, it may become more difficult to control blood sugar levels. Reduced food intake or being unable to eat due to illness can also result in elevated ketone levels. If this occurs, consult your physician, as changes to your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar or ketone testing may be necessary.

Pregnancy may exacerbate diabetes, so it is important to discuss a plan for managing blood sugar levels with your physician. Your physician may adjust your diabetes treatment during pregnancy, including changes to your diet and medications, including insulin.
