Description

Drug Description:

This medicine is used to relieve symptoms due to digestive enzyme deficiency. Symptoms include bloating, gas, fullness, and inability to tolerate certain foods. This medicine is also used in patients with cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, post-pancreatectomy, post-gastrointestinal bypass surgery, and ductal obstruction from neoplasm (e.g., of the pancreas or common bile duct).Store between 59 and 86 degrees F. Protect from high humidity. Keep the container tightly closed, do not refrigerate.How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take this medicine as directed by your health care provider. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsules, open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on food. If the capsules are opened, avoid inhaling the medicine powder. Some people may experience an allergic reaction, including asthma attack. Talk with your doctor if you experience loose stools. Your dosage may need to be reduced. Do not stop taking this medicine or take more than directed without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine you are having an episode of pancreas inflammation you are allergic to pork productsBefore using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal medication, or dietary supplement if you have any other medical condition. To protect the enteric coating, the microtablets should not be crushed or chewed. If swallowing is difficult, the capsule may be opened and the contents may be shaken onto a small quantity of a soft food which does not require chewing (applesauce, dessert gelatin), and swallowed immediately. Contact of the microtablets with foods such as milk, custard, ice cream and many other dairy products can dissolve the protective enteric coating. Cases of fibrotic stricture formation in the ascending colon have been reported in patients ith cystic fibrosis with the use of high potency enzyme supplements in high doses. If symptoms suggestive of gastrointestinal obstruction occur the possibility of bowel strictures should be considered. Any change in pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision.If an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction occurs to this medicine, discontinue the medication and treat the patient symptomatically.Most severe:  Asthma attack if contents are inhaled. Allergic reaction (rash; hives; breathing difficulties; swelling of the mouth, face, and lips); nausea; vomiting.Most common:  Rash; loose stools (usually at high doses); bloating; constipation; stomach cramps or pain, nausea.Other: Mouth irritation, extremely high doses of exogenous pancreatic enzymes have been associated with hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria
