Indications
Albuterol, also recognized as salbutamol, is employed to both avert and address wheezing and breathing difficulties stemming from respiratory issues like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is also utilized to prevent exercise-induced asthma. Operating as a rapid-response remedy, albuterol belongs to the category of drugs known as bronchodilators. Its mechanism involves the relaxation of the muscles encircling the airways, facilitating their expansion and promoting easier breathing.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication through inhalation, following the guidance of your doctor, usually every 4 to 6 hours as required. The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not escalate the dosage or employ this medication more frequently than instructed by your doctor. Overusing this medication heightens the risk of severe (potentially fatal) side effects.
For preventing exercise-induced asthma, use the medication 15 to 30 minutes before physical activity.
Refrain from utilizing a spacer with this inhaler and do not open the cap until you are ready to take a dose.
Before use, keep the inhaler upright and open the cap. A clicking sound will signify its readiness. Position the mouthpiece close to your mouth and exhale comfortably. Do not exhale into the inhaler. Subsequently, insert the mouthpiece into your mouth, seal your lips around it, and inhale steadily and deeply. Sustain your breath for roughly 10 seconds or for a duration that feels comfortable. After use, close the cap.
Wipe the external part of the mouthpiece with a dry tissue or cloth as needed. Do not employ water or any other liquid for cleaning. In case liquid enters the inhaler, its functionality may be compromised. Replace the inhaler if it comes into contact with water or is washed.
When a child uses this medication, a parent or responsible adult may need to assist them in utilizing the inhaler correctly.
If you are concurrently employing other inhalers, ensure at least 1 minute elapses between the administration of each medication.
Keep this fast-acting inhaler accessible at all times. Monitor the number of inhalations used from each device. Dispose of the inhaler once you have employed the number of inhalations indicated on the manufacturer’s packaging.
Determine which inhalers are for daily use (controller drugs) and which are for sudden worsening of breathing (quick-relief drugs). Consult your doctor in advance about appropriate actions if you experience new or worsening symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, increased sputum, deteriorating peak flow meter readings, nighttime breathing difficulties, frequent use of the quick-relief inhaler (more than twice a week), or if the quick-relief inhaler seems ineffective.
Be informed when you can address sudden breathing difficulties on your own and when immediate medical assistance is required.
Side Effects

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse
- shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet
- trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
- bladder pain
- bloody or cloudy urine
- chest discomfort, tightness, or pain
- chills
- cough
- cough producing mucus
- diarrhea
- difficult or labored breathing
- difficulty with swallowing
- dizziness
- feeling of warmth
- fever
- frequent urge to urinate
- hives, itching, or skin rash
- hoarseness
- loss of appetite
- lower back or side pain
Caution
Before initiating albuterol usage, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether to albuterol itself, similar drugs, or any other substances. This product might contain inactive components (such as lactose, milk proteins) that could trigger allergic reactions or other adverse effects.
Prior to commencing this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of heart issues, high blood pressure, or seizures.
This medication may induce dizziness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana may exacerbate dizziness. Until you are certain of your capabilities, avoid activities such as driving, operating machinery, or any task requiring alertness.
If you are pregnant, only employ this medication when absolutely necessary, after thorough discussion of the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
The passage of this drug into breast milk remains uncertain. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
